Bronx, N.Y. - While their varsity counterparts were up on Murphy Field at a walk through in preparation for the season opener tomorrow at Bryant, the junior varsity squad was on Jack Coffey Field hosting Nassau Community College. Unfortunately for the Rams, the JV couldn't generate much on the offensive side of the ball and the Lions took advantage of Fordham miscues to shut out Fordham, 35-0.

The game started off on the wrong foot for the Rams as Nassau Community College returned the opening kickoff 79 yards for a score.

After the Rams went three-and-out on their first offensive possession, the Fordham special teams created a turnover as a Jon Karanian punt was fumbled by the Lions and Craig Staub pounced on the loose ball for the Rams on the Nassau 47.

But the Fordham offense couldn't take advantage of the field position and punted the ball back to the Lions. Nassau then went on a 16-play drive that covered 85 yards, culminated by a one-yard scoring rush with 2:46 left in the first as the Lions took a 14-0 lead.

The Fordham offense went three-and-out and Nassau took over on its own 25 following a punt. After Kassim Forbes tackled a Lion runner in the backfield for a loss of one, Nassau attempted a pass. But the Lion quarterback was forced out of the pocket and eventually sacked by three Fordham players back to the seven and an intentional grounding penalty was tacked on forcing the Lions to punt from their own end zone.

The Rams took over on the Nassau 37 following the punt and, after a three-yard rush by Kyle Finnegan, quarterback James Avedesian gained eight yards on a carry to pick up the first Fordham first down of the game. Another rush from Avedesian netted three yards and Finnegan followed with a six-yard gain to give the Rams a third and one from the 20. Avedesian picked up the first down with a two-yard carry but the drive stalled on the 15 when Avedesian could only pick up three yards on a fourth-and-seven situation.

The Fordham defense kept the Lions in their own end, forcing Nassau to punt from its own 26 and giving the offense the ball on the Fordham 38. But on the third play from scrimmage Avedesian was intercepted at midfield.

The Lions moved the ball out to the Fordham 26 but failed on a 43-yard field goal attempt.

On the Nassau's next offensive possession, the Lions attempted a deep pass over the middle but the ball was tipped and intercepted by Forbes, who was on the ground, on the Fordham two.

The Rams hoped to run the clock out in the half but after gaining three yards on a Quasand Lewis rush on the first play, the Fordham was called for a false start, moving the ball back to the two. On the next play, the ball was fumbled in the end zone and recovered by Nassau with 14 seconds left in the half as the Lions took a 21-0 lead into the break.

After the Rams were held to a three-and-out on the first series of the second half, Karanian mishandled the snap on a punt attempt and the ball was recovered by Nassau in the end zone for a 28-0 lead two minutes into the half.

The next offensive possession also ended in three plays for the Rams and this time the Lions blocked a Karanian punt attempt and recovered the ball on the Fordham eleven. After a holding call moved the Lions back to the 21, Nassau covered the 21 yards on the next play for a 35-0 lead midway through the third quarter.

On Fordham's next defensive series, the Rams held the Lions to three plays and Nassau punted the ball back to Fordham. The Rams took over on their own ten and, keeping the ball on the ground, were able to move it to the 39 where the drive ended with a Karanian punt.

Neither team mounted much of an offense in the fourth quarter as the game ended with the Lions winning 35-0.

The Fordham JV is next slated to play at Army on Thursday, September 9th at 5:00 p.m.
