Fordham University junior Kevin Fitzgerald (New Orleans, La./Jesuit) and freshman Michael Belgiovine (Mahwah, N.J./Don Bosco Prep) were named the Atlantic 10 men's cross country performer and rookie of the week, respectively, it was announced by the conference office. It is the first weekly cross country award for both. It marks the first time that a Fordham male runner has earned A-10 performer of the week honors while Belgiovine becomes the fourth Ram to earn cross country rookie of the week honors.
The men's cross country team was split into two squads on Saturday with one competing in the Purple Valley Invitational at Williams College and the other at the Leeber Invitational at Fairfield University.
Both Fitzgerald and Belgiovine ran at Williams with Fitzgerald taking third out of 198 runners and Belgiovine placing eighth. Fitzgerald covered the 8k course in a time of 26:22, making him the top Fordham finisher, 22 seconds behind the winner. Belgiovine's time of 26:29 made him the second Fordham finisher, behind teammate Fitzgerald.
The duo's performance helped the Rams pick up third place out of 18 teams.
On the year, Fitzgerald and Belgiovine have competed in two races, with Belgiovine taking fourth (27:26.98) and Fitzgerald 54th (28:23.66) at the season opening Fordham Fiasco.
The Fordham men's and women's cross country teams will next be in action on Friday, October 8th, as they compete in the Metropolitan Championship at Van Cortlandt Park at 2:00 PM.
