Women's Tennis Opens Play at Eastern Championships

West Point, N.Y. - The Fordham women's tennis squad opened play at the Eastern Championships being held at Army today with the A doubles team of Mia Fiocca and Sarah Tremaine winning two matches to advance to the quarterfinals on Saturday.

In the A doubles competition, Fiocca and Tremaine opened the tournament with an 8-0 win over Holy Cross' Carnie Dajani and Emma Rudnik and they then upended Army's Anne Hang and Erin Colton, 8-5. Fiocca and Tremaine will next take on Bucknell's' Demi Iepuras and Elena Vidrascu in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 9:00 AM.

In A singles Angelika Dabu defeated St. Bonventure's Manuela Marin, dropping the first set 4-6 before taking the second, 6-2, and the tiebreaker, 10-7. She then fell to Elizabeth Adams from Pittsburgh, winning the first set, 6-1, before falling 6-3 in the second set and dropping the tiebreaker, 10-5.

In B singles play, Fordham's Hanna Fritzinger defeated Bucknell's Dara Dwojewski in the first round in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-0, before falling to Katherine Hanson from Stony Brook in the round of 16, 6-1, 6-1.

In C singles action, Bethany Boyle opened play with a 6-4, 6-3 loss to Bowdoin's Sasanna Howard and then fell to Army's Margaret Iliev in the first round of the consolation bracket, 8-4.

In D singles, Taylor Holt upended Joana San from Marist in the first round, 6-4, 1-6, 10-8, before losing to Seton Hall's Courtney Kilarski in the round of 16, 6-4, 6-0.

In B doubles, the team of Monika Chao and Jennifer Mullen fell to Hannah Hoerner and Kate Winingham from Bowdoin, 8-4, in the first round. They will face Juliana Boas and Joanna Macaluso in the quarterfinals of the consolation round on Saturday ay 1:30 PM.
