Cory Hubbard, former assistant coach at Texas Christian University and the University of Arizona, was named assistant director of tennis/head men's tennis coach at Fordham University it was announced today.
"We are extremely excited to have found someone as experienced and successful as Cory Hubbard to lead our men's tennis program," said Frank McLaughlin, Executive Director of Athletics. "He will be a tremendous addition to our program and will help recruit and develop quality tennis student-athletes at Fordham and carry on the great tradition of the legendary Bob Hawthorn."
Currently the director of tennis at the Roxbury Swim & Tennis Club in Stamford, Connecticut, Hubbard also serves as the Director of the Junior and Elite Programs at the Gotham Stadium Club in the Bronx. With the Gotham Stadium Club he is responsible for developing lesson plans, organizing group practices, recruiting new players, managing staff pros, and private coaching.
"I'm excited to be leading the Fordham men's tennis program, especially following a renowned coach like Bob Hawthorn." said Hubbard. "I've always wanted to be a head coach and I'm grateful to Fordham for giving me that opportunity. I feel that with my experience working with top 20 programs at TCU and Arizona, I can help elevate the Fordham program. Our goal is to have a chance at the Atlantic 10 championship each year and with the support I've received from the Fordham administration and the athletic department I believe that it's an achievable goal."
Hubbard developed and coached some of the top junior players in the East, including several Eastern Sectional Champions. He also recently served as a private coach for ATP ranked players Alex Menichini, Dave Lingman, Cosmin and Aurelija Misevicuite, who was the number one ranked women's player in the NCAA in 2008.
A 2000 graduate of Texas A&M University with a degree in marketing, Hubbard was a four-year letterman with the Aggies' tennis team. As a senior, he received the Aggie Heart Award, an award that is presented to the athlete that displays the most dedication and best work ethic in the field of competition, classroom and community, while representing the team with class and humility. Hubbard was a member of the 1998 and 2000 Big 12 Conference championship teams with the 2000 squad finishing the season ranked tenth in the NCAA and the 1998 team 15th. He was named to the 1997 and 2000 Academic All-Big 12 First Team and was a GTE Scholar-Athlete award winner all four years at Texas A&M.
Hubbard started his coaching career as an assistant coach at Texas Christian University from 2002-05, helping the Horned Frogs advance to three straight NCAA tournaments and coaching nine All-Conference USA players as well as the 2004-05 Conference USA Player of the Year.
In his first season at TCU, the Horned Frogs advanced to the finals of the Conference USA tournament and to the second round of the NCAA tournament. The squad finished the year ranked 20th in the nation.
In 2003-04, TCU was ranked as high as #5 nationally, with wins over #7 Virginia, #9 Texas A&M and #10 Kentucky, and the team advanced to the NCAA championship sweet 16. He coached the Conference USA singles and doubles champions, the ITA Regional doubles champions and the ITA Regional singles quarterfinalist. That year, Hubbard also mentored the Conference USA Player of the Year along with two All-Conference USA selections. For his exploits, Hubbard was nominated for the ITA Assistant Coach of the Year award.
Hubbard's final year at TCU was just as successful as his first two as the Horned Frogs were again nationally ranked and he helped coach the 2004-05 Conference USA Player of the Year.
In 2005-06 Hubbard moved to the University of Arizona where he served as an assistant coach for the Wildcats, guiding the team to its first NCAA tournament appearance in three years and the program's second win ever over tennis powerhouse USC. He also coached two All-Pac 10 selections as well as an NCAA All-American singles player.
In four years as an assistant coach, Hubbard coached 14 All-Conference selections and three First Team All-Americans.
After his year at Arizona, Hubbard came east to assume the position as the Director of Tennis at the Cold Spring Harbor Beach Club in Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. He held that position until moving to the Roxbury Swim and Tennis Club this past April.
