Fordham University senior middle hitter Christi Griffiths (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) was named the Atlantic 10 Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week it was announced by the league office today. It is the second weekly award of the year for Griffiths, who was named Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 31, and is the sixth time she has been honored by the conference, earning a Defensive Player of the Week award last year as well as three Rookie of the Week accolades in 2007.
Last week, Griffiths was named to the All-Tournament team at the Columbia Invitational after helping Fordham to a second-place finish with wins over Fairleigh Dickinson (3-0) and Bucknell (3-1). She finished the four-game week with 25 kills - 2.33 per set - a .379 hitting percentage and nine digs. Griffiths also recorded 12 total blocks, bringing her career total to 359 blocks and 294 block assists, becoming the Rams' career leader in both categories. She surpassed Marija Markovic's career blocks (351) and block assists (288) records.
Griffiths also passed Tihana Sarlija (1,192) for second on the Rams' all-time kills list over the weekend with 1,217 career kills. She now only trails Val Bosticco's all-time mark of 1,443 kills.
The Rams will next be in action on Tuesday night, September 21, as they travel to East Orange, N.J., to face Seton Hall University at 7:00 PM.
