Fordham University's senior middle hitter Christi Griffiths (Lancaster, Pa./Hempfield) and freshman setter Sara Konkel (Elk Grove, Calif./Pleasant Grove) received Atlantic 10 weekly volleyball honors, it was announced on Tuesday. Griffiths earned her fifth career weekly award as the conference's Offensive Player of the Week, while Konkel received her first, as the league's top rookie.
Griffiths and Konkel were instrumental in Fordham winning the 2010 Beanpot Classic with a perfect 4-0 record, as the Rams are out to the best start in program history.
Griffiths was named Most Valuable Player at the Beanpot Classic, averaging 2.53 kills, 0.93 blocks, and 3.53 points per set during the tournament. The Lancaster, Pa., native opened the 2010 campaign with 11 kills, two blocks, and an impressive .562 hitting percentage in the Rams' five-set win over Northeastern. Her hitting percentage marked the second-highest in a five-set match in Fordham volleyball history.
She went on to hit .615 with eight kills, four digs, two blocks, and tie her career-high with three aces versus Boston College, before registering eight kills and five blocks in a straight set win over Holy Cross. Griffiths concluded the tournament by hitting .500 with 11 kills, six digs, and five blocks against Quinnipiac.
Konkel was named to the Beanpot Classic All-Tournament Team in her first collegiate event, averaging 10.14 assists and 2.21 digs per set during the four-match tournament. Konkel opened the tournament with her first double-double, tallying 51 assists and 14 digs, to go with a pair of kills against Northeastern, before adding 32 assists and five digs in a win over Boston College.
She then registered 37 assists and seven digs in a win over Holy Cross and then came off the bench against Quinnipiac, to close out the tournament with 22 assists, five digs and two kills.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Friday, September 3rd, when they start play at the Maryland Invitational. Fordham will meet host Maryland on Friday at 7:30 PM, and then take on Georgetown and Bradley on Saturday at 10:30 AM and 4:30 PM, respectively.
