Bronx, N.Y. -
All of them have been on campus for over two weeks for preseason practice. Some have even started their season already. But that didn't stop members of the Fordham University football, volleyball, men's soccer, water polo, cross country and cheerleading squads from spending part of their Sunday standing at the ready outside of the various dorms, helping the incoming freshmen unload their vehicles. This has become an annual event for the Rams, who come to the aid of the Office of Residential Life by lending a hand to make move-in day run smoothly.
"The Residential Life Office helps us out when we open camp in the summer by allowing us to move in early," said Fordham head coach Tom Masella. "This is our way of thanking them and of welcoming the new students to Fordham."
The water polo Rams had the first shift from 9:00 AM until 11:00 AM, helping out at Martyr's Court as well as at Alumni North and South, hauling the heavy goods, including refrigerators, televisions and cases of water, up flights of stairs,
gleaning admiration from parents and students who thought they would have to do the heavy lifting themselves. They were relived by the football Rams at 11:00 AM who were joined by members of the men's soccer team. The football squad also provided help at Tierney Hall. The volleyball squad, who just returned to campus after winning the Beanpot Classic in Worcester and Boston on Friday and Saturday, and men's and women's cross country teams took over from football and men's soccer at Alumni North and South and Martyr's Court at 1:00 PM..
The football Rams will open their 2010 schedule on Saturday, September 4th, when the Rams travel to Smithfield, R.I., to face the Bryant University Bulldogs at 3:00 p.m. Season tickets are now available on the Fordham Athletic Website at www.fordhamsports.com.
As previously mentioned, the women's volleyball team opened play this past weekend as they won the Beanpot Classic, defeating Northeastern, 3-2, and Boston College, 3-0, on Saturday in Worcester, and Holy Cross, 3-0, and Quinnipiac, 3-1, on Sunday at Boston College. Christi Griffiths and Sara Konkel were named to the All-Tournament Team with Griffiths also garnering Most Valuable Player honors. They will open their home season on Friday and Saturday, September 10th and 11th as they host the Rose Hill Classic in the Rose Hill Gym.
The men's soccer squad opens their 2010 slate on Wednesday night, September 1st, as they host Adelphi University on Jack Coffey Field at 7:00 p.m.
The water polo Rams open their 2010 season at the Navy Invitational on September 4th and 5th while the cross country team will open the 2010 season on Saturday, September 11th, as they host the Fordham Fiasco at Van Cortlandt Park at 10:30 a.m.
