Bronx, N.Y. - As the second week of camp comes to a close, the 2010 Fordham University football squad held its second scrimmage this afternoon on Jack Coffey Field this with both sides of the ball showing improvement from the first scrimmage. Additionally, Patrick Murray connected on five of his six field goal attempts as the sophomore looks to strengthen the Rams' kicking game.

"We had a lot of guys get playing time and we saw a lot of good things today," said head coach Tom Masella. "Overall it was a good scrimmage. We did a good job on both sides of the ball and saw that if we don't shoot ourselves in the foot we can score points."

In an effort to prevent injuries, there was no tackling in the game, which allowed some players who haven't seen much action this summer to get in the game. The offense came out and scored immediately as on the third play from scrimmage Jason Caldwell took a handoff around the left side and down the sideline 61 yards for the score.

After the touchdown, the defense settled down, forcing the offense to three-and-outs on the next five series, limiting the offense gained to just 23 net yards over the five possessions. The good news for the offense was Murray's punting as he averaged 42.0 yards/punt on the five kicks.

The offense picked up a first down on the next possession as, after Alex Locker tackled Xavier Martin for a two-yard loss, Kevin Carter was whistled for inference after breaking up a Ryan Higgins pass, giving the offense the ball on its own 34. But the offense couldn't take advantage of the first down as Higgins threw incompletions on second and third down, the later pass being knocked down by Alex Locker.

A big play on the first play of the next series set the offense up for a score. On the play, Doug Papy found Aaron Mays deep down the middle for a 46-yard completion, putting the ball on the defense's 29. Two rushes from Langston Lacroix gained eight yards but Papy fumbled the snap on third down and the offense settled for a 29-yard field goal.

The first team offense then executed a 50-yard, 12-play drive, capped by a 22-yard Murray field goal. Carlton Koonce opened the drive with a pair of carries to gain ten yards. Over the next four plays, Blake Wayne rushed for 18 yards and hooked up with Patrick Miller for a five-yard pass to move the ball to the defense's 35. A five-yard rush from Wayne was followed by a ten-yard gain for Koonce to put the ball on the 20. But the offense was moved back five yards by a penalty and the drive stalled on the nine where Murray booted a 22-yard field goal.

The defense came back with three more three-and-outs with the second series stopped by George Apostolopoulos a sack of James Avedesian and the third halted by a Chris Coratti pass breakup.

The offense got back on the board on the next series, moving from its own 32 to the defense's 13 where Wayne hooked up with Caldwell in the end zone. The big play of the drive was a diving catch by Patrick Miller on the second play of the series, picking up 22 yards. Wayne completed five of eight passes on the drive, including a seven-yard completion to Miller on fourth-and-five from the 20.

After a short break, the offense was trapped deep in its own end and was able to pick up a first down on one of three series.

After a free kick, the offense took over on the defense's 45. After a false start penalty, Martin picked up ten yards before Higgins found Stephen Skelton with a nine-yard gain. The offense got the ball to the 27 but Higgins was sacked by Jake Rodriquez and Murray came on to kick a 45-yard field goal.

Wayne then led the offense on a scoring drive, covering 32 yards on six plays, finding Koonce in the end zone as he was scrambling out of the pocket with a nine-yard touchdown pass.

The next two drives ended with Murray punts as Kevin Scanlon sacked Benjamin Heiser to end the first possession and the defense didn't allow a yard on the second.

After Murray ended the next drive with a missed field goal, his only miss on the day, he knocked through his fourth field goal of the day on the ensuing drive, a 39-yarder. He then closed out the day's scoring with a 33-yarder on the next series.

Wayne completed eleven of 24 passes for 104 yards and two touchdowns with Caldwell leading all receivers with five catches for 44 yards and one touchdown, along with another score on the ground.
