The Fordham Cheerleaders began training for the upcoming 2010-2011 season this past week. The squad, who cheers for football, men's basketball, women's basketball and competes in Universal Cheerleaders Association College Nationals, introduced nine new rookies to the team with a week-long training camp held at Rose Hill. The squad then attended a three-day UCA sponsored camp held at Southern Connecticut State University. The very promising rookie class, consisting of seven incoming freshman and two sophomores, were welcomed by the 11 veteran cheerleaders.
"We have a very talented group of rookies this year and they are going to be huge assets to our team. They are working hard already and picking everything up very quickly!" said Paulina Strzelec, a four-year member of the team.
During the weeklong `pre-camp' training session at Rose Hill, the girls completed cardio, endurance and lifting routines each day, mastered stunting and tumbling fundamentals and learned cheers and dances for the football and basketball seasons. The squad then continued to UCA camp at SCSU along with several other colleges from around the northeast to acquire the newest stunting techniques and showcase their new game-day material. Hard work was rewarded, as the Fordham Cheerleading squad was named `Most Collegiate', an award giving to the squad who best represents how a college squad should perform and present themselves. The squad also won first place in the Cheer Competition, second place in the Sideline Competition and was nominated for the Leadership Award by former National Champions, SCSU.
The girls look to continue this progressive momentum in the year ahead. They set a goal at being a top 10 team in the 2011 College Cheerleading Nationals. Be sure to join the Fordham Cheerleaders as they help kick off the 2010 football season on September 11, 2010 against Rhode Island!
