Bronx, N.Y. - With only a week of practices behind them, the 2010 Fordham University football squad took to Jack Coffey Field this afternoon for its first scrimmage of camp. And as to be expected, both sides of the ball showed flashes of things to come but both also have some work do.

"We have a long way to go," said head coach Tom Masella. "We made some good plays on both sides of the ball. The effort was good today but we have to learn to execute better. We're pretty much right where we should be at this point of the season."

The defense held the offense in check for the first three possessions, allowing just one first down. Paul Barchitta led the second unit on the second possession, recording three tackles in the series.

On the fourth series, the first offense faced off against the first defense with Ryan Higgins at quarterback. On the third play from scrimmage, the offense faced a third-and-three from its own 31 when Higgins hooked up with Brandon Anderson deep down the left side for a 34-yard gain. Two plays later, the offense lost six yards when Jake Rodriques sacked Higgins and the offense was later forced to attempt a 45-yard Patrick Murray field goal which went wide left.

On the next series, the third team offense moved the ball from its own 27 to the defense's 40 but a fourth down James Avedesian pass fell incomplete. The big play of the drive was a 22-yard run from Quasand Lewis that took the ball from the offense's 35 to the defense's 43.

Two possessions later, the second offense went from its own 35 to the defense's 37, aided by two ten-yard Blake Wayne rushes, but the drive stalled on the 37.

After a three-and-out from the first offense, the offense converted on two third-and-ones to advance the ball across midfield and down to the 39. But back-to-back incomplete passes stopped the drive there.

The defense again clamped down on the offense, not allowing a first down over the next two series before Matthew Sconiers recovered a Wayne fumble on the defense's 39 to end another drive.

The offense got on the board on the ensuing possession, moving from its own 39 to the defense's four where Murray connected on a 22-yard field goal. The offense did most of its damage on the ground with Carlton Koonce gaining 42 yards on four carries, the big one a39-yard gain on the second play of the series to put the ball on the defense's 19.

Two series later, Xavier Martin gained 15 yards on three carries before Wayne hooked up with Namdi Onyeabor on the left side and Onyeabor took the ball to the end zone for a 45-yard touchdown reception.

That would be all the scoring until the second half, which started out well for the defense as it ended the first series of the second half by sacking Avedesian. The next two series were three-and-outs for the offense before Benjamin Heiser took over the offense and completed three passes on a four play, 65-yard drive, capped with a 26-yard scoring strike to Mark Harvey. Heiser started the drive with a 35-yard completion to Gerard Rizzo and, after a rush from Lewis, hooked up with Andrew Spanarkel for a three-yard gain to put the ball on the 26.

On the final series of the scrimmage the offense scored again, moving from its own 35 to the defense's nine where Avedesian hit Rizzo in the end zone to end the game. Avedesian completed three of four passes on the drive for 56 yards, the big one being a 39-yarder to Spanarkel to put the ball on the defense's 26.

Wayne completed seven of 15 passes for 83 yards while Heiser was three-for-three for 64 yards and Doug Papy completed eight of eleven passes for 47 yards. Koonce led all rusher with 63 yards on nine carries while Xavier Martin gained 46 on 13 rushes.

Rizzo led all receivers with six catches for 71 yards while Harvey finished with five receptions for 46 yards and Namdi Onyeabor hauled in three passes for 57 yards.

Defensively, Barchitta led the Rams with five solo stops while Isa Abdul-Quddus and Justin Yancey each added four and Jamal Haruna and Brendan Melanophy finished with three tackles.

The Rams will have their second scrimmage of camp on Saturday, August 21st, at 4:00 p.m. on Jack Coffey Field.
