Fordham University senior Chelsea Berry (Mansfield, Ohio/St. Peter's), graduate student Ravelle Mohammed (Bayville, N.Y./Kellenberg) and senior Stephanie Narduzzo (East Amherst, N.Y./East Amherst) were named National Scholar-Athletes by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) it was announced today. The award recognizes student-athletes with a 3.5 cumulative GPA or higher that competed in 75 percent of her team's 2010 spring races. Also, the student-athletes must be upperclassmen (sophomore, junior or senior) in terms of eligibility and their head coaches must be good standing members of the CRCA.
This is the third consecutive year in which Narduzzo has been honored by the CRCA while it is the first scholar-athlete award for Berry and Mohammed.
All three rowers were members of the Fordham varsity 8 this year, a shell that won the 2009 Fall and the 2010 Spring Metropolitan Intercollegiate Rowing Association's Championship as well as winning the petite final at the 2010 Knecht Cup, second in the petite final at the 2010 Murphy Cup and fifth at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship
More recently, the varsity 8 placed third in the petite final at the 2010 Dad Vail Championship on May 8th, being edged at the line by 0.304 seconds by the Delaware crew.
A week prior to the Dad Vails, the varsity 8 took fourth in the grand final at the ECAC Mid-Atlantic/New England Regional Championships on May 1st on the Cooper River.
Narduzzo, who was also named Academic All-Atlantic 10 in 2010 and was the 2010 recipient of the Harter Award as the top student-athlete in the College of Business Administration, earned a degree in Business Administration.
Berry graduated last month with a degree in Business Administration with a concentration in Finance & Marketing while Mohammed received a degree in Communication and Media Studies in 2009 and is currently working on a master's degree in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
