Fordham University junior catcher Chris Walker (Bethpage, N.Y./St. Anthony's) was named to the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Second Team All-Northeast Region Team it was announced by the ABCA today. This is Walker's third postseason accolade for 2010 as he earned First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors prior to the Atlantic 10 Championship and was named a Second Team ECAC All-Star on June 15th.
Walker is the first Ram to earn ABCA All-Region honors since Bobby Kingsbury was named Second Team All-Region in 2002 while this is the third straight season that Fordham has had an ECAC All-Star selection, as Walker joined Bobby DiNardo (Second Team - 2009) and Tom Davis (First Team - 2008) as previous ECAC All-Stars.
Walker was the first Ram since Davis and Rich Goulian in 2008 to earn First Team All-Atlantic 10 accolades. He had a breakout year as a junior, leading the team with career-highs in batting average (.370), hits (81), doubles (25), home runs (6), RBI (61), total bases (124), slugging percentage (.566).
His 25 doubles broke the Fordham single season record of 21, set by Mike Marchiano in 1997, while his 61 RBI and 81 hits were tied for the second-best single season total in school history. His total bases count of 124 was the fourth-best mark in team history as well. In the Atlantic 10, Walker finished tied for first in doubles, sixth in RBI, seventh in hits, and tenth in batting average.
In conference play, Walker hit .348 with a .616 slugging percentage, 25 runs scored, 12 doubles, six home runs, and 31 RBI. He was also named Atlantic 10 Player of the Week once during the course of the season.
Walker is currently in the Cape Cod League, playing for the Wareham Gatemen. He opened summer play with a 2-for-4 performance in a 5-2 win over Cotuit Kettleers on June 13th and is currently hitting .273 (6-22) with a double and four RBI in eight games.
