Rowing Competes at Dad Vail Regatta

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Fordham University rowing squad ventured down to Philadelphia to compete in the Aberdeen Dad Vail Regatta, the largest collegiate regatta in the United States, featuring over 100 college and university from the United State and Canada. The top finish for the Rams was the varsity 8 which placed third in the petite final on Saturday.

The racing started on Friday with the Fordham varsity 8 placing second in its heat, just behind Cal-Sacramento, to advance to the semi-finals. The Rams crossed the line in 6:55.980, about seven seconds behind Sacramento but ahead of Connecticut, Drake, Villanova and Binghamton.

In the semifinals on Saturday, the Fordham varsity just missed qualifying for the grand final, placing third behind Drexel and Buffalo (the top two advanced to the grand final). Fordham's time of 7:09.610 was just over four seconds behind Buffalo though the Rams did beat Vermont, North Carolina and Ohio State to the finish line.

In the petite final, the Rams were edged at the line by 0.304 seconds by the Delaware crew as Fordham settled for third in the race. Loyola won the petite final in 7:15.610, followed by Delaware (7:19.642), Fordham (7:19.946), Temple, San Diego State and Vermont.

The Rams also entered shells in the varsity 4, junior varsity 8 and novice 8 at Dad Vails. The novice 8 took second in its heat on Friday to advance to the semi-finals on Saturday. The Rams placed just behind Purdue in the heat, finishing in 7:43.541, but in front of Connecticut, Loyola and William and Mary.

In the novice 8 semifinals, the Rams just missed advancing to the finals, placing third in the race (the top two advanced to the finals). Connecticut won the semi-final race followed by Delaware with the Rams taking third in 7:09.610, ahead of Drexel and Lafayette.

The Fordham varsity 4 placed fourth in its heat in 7:35.36, behind Robert Morris, Connecticut and St. Thomas but in front of Cincinnati and Charleston.

The Fordham junior varsity 8 took fifth in its heat in 8:01.510, behind Buffalo, Connecticut, Vermont and Colgate.
