Greensboro, N.C. - The field for the 2010 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field East Regional was set this past weekend with two Fordham Rams being listed for competition in Greensboro, North Carolina, as graduate student Brigid Moriarty (Manchester, Vt./Burr & Burton Seminary) and junior Kerri Gallagher (Belle Harbor, N.Y./Bishop Kearney) will be in the mix for a possible NCAA Championship berth at North Carolina A&T's Irwin Belk Track.
This is the first time Fordham has had two female athletes reach the NCAA Regional in the same season.
The three-day competition will begin on Thursday, May 27th, as senior Brigid Moriarty will compete in the NCAA Semifinal of the 10,000 meter run. The approximate time of the event is set for 9:15 PM. Moriarty is seeded 42nd in a field of 48 runners, after posting a qualifying time of 35:41.96, which came at the Raleigh Relays, hosted by N.C. State.
The time by Moriarty was the second fastest in school history, behind only Fordham record holder Lauren Gubicza, who ran 33:34.37 in 1990. Moriarty also holds the third and fourth fastest times in the 10,000 meters as well.
Moriarty, who was named the 2009 women's cross country MVP and co-MVP with Gallagher for women's outdoor track & field, won the 10,000 meter run at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Championships in a time of 35:53.16 to earn First Team All-Conference honors. She also placed 12th in the College Women's Championship 3000m race at the 2010 Penn Relays and won the 10,000m at the 2010 Metropolitan Championships.
Most recently, Moriarty took fourth in the 10,000m at the 2010 ECAC Outdoor Championships at Princeton University.
Moriarty also received academic honors from the Atlantic 10, being named Academic All-Conference in cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track & field. She is first Fordham female runner to earn Academic All-Conference honors in all three seasons, and the third overall Fordham track athlete to do so, joining
Clifton Hilario (2008-09) and Jon Scott (2000-01).
Gallagher will run in the First Round of the 800 meters on Thursday as well at 8:00 PM. Based on her time there, she would advance to NCAA Quarterfinal of the 800 meters on Friday, May 28th, during day two of the competition. The approximate time of the event is 6:45 PM. Gallagher is seeded 32nd in the field of 48 runners after her time of 2:08.75 at the ECAC Championship, two weekends ago. She was third in her heat and 13th overall in the ECAC meet.
Gallagher won the 800 meters at the Atlantic 10 Championships in an Atlantic 10 record time of 2:09.08, improving on her ECAC qualifying time, to earn First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors. She was also a member of the 4x400 relay at A-10s, placing fourth in a school record time of 3:50.64, and the 4x800 that also placed fourth.
Gallagher also won the 800 meters at the 2010 Metropolitan Outdoor Championships and placed fifth 800 meters at the 2010 Colonial Relays.
Academically, Gallagher was named Academic All-Atlantic 10 for indoor and outdoor track and field in 2009-10.
