Day two of the Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championships saw the Fordham track & field teams place eighth in both the men's and women's competition, which was won by Charlotte and Temple, respectively. Highlighting the day, Fordham had two All-Conference performers crowned, while two school records were set at the UMass Track & Field Complex in Amherst, Massachusetts.
Temple won the women's competition by 5.5 points over Dayton with a score of 143.5. Dayton was second with 138, followed by Charlotte (137), Rhode Island (122), Richmond (78.75), Massachusetts (65), Duquesne (50.25), Fordham (33), Saint Louis (29), La Salle (22), Xavier (20.75), and Saint Joseph's (18.75).
Leading the way for the Rams, junior Kerri Gallagher won the 800 meter run in an Atlantic 10 record time of 2:09.08 to earn First Team All-Atlantic 10 honors, joining teammate Brigid Moriarty as a 2010 Championship event winner. The previous record was La Salle's ToniAnn Razzi's 2001 time of 2:09.20.
Fordham's other scorers were both school record performances by the women's 4x400 relay team and sophomore Blair Hassell. The women's 4x400 team, consisting of Kelly Connolly, Kerri Gallagher, Kerry Kwalwasser, and Elisabeth Warren, placed fourth in a school record time of 3:50.64, breaking the 2002 record of 3:52.58, set by Grace White, Stephanie Irvin, Naaemah Brown, and Christina Scott.
Later in the competition, Hassell broke her own school mark in the javelin throw with a distance of 129' 3 ½", which placed her sixth overall.
In addition to the scorers on day two, Sherilyn Groeninger was 15th in the 200 meters (25.80), Ashley Davis (2:24.56) and Brittany Bolella (2:29.01) were 26th and 32nd in the 800 meters, respectively, Christina Machado was 26th in the 1500 meters (5:14.51), Mairin O'Connor was 16th in the 5,000 meters (19:20.06), and Catherine Groene was 13th in the 400 meter hurdles (1:05.55) and 16th in the triple jump (34' ¾").
The women's 4x100 relay of Groeninger, Groene, Connolly, and Kwalwasser also placed 10th in 49.22 seconds.
In the men's competition, Charlotte ran away with the team title with a score of 234 points. Temple was second with 139, followed by Rhode Island (123), Massachusetts (104), Duquesne (47), La Salle (43), Richmond (42), Fordham (39), Saint Louis (37), Xavier (30), and Saint Joseph's (20).
Junior Brian Schmidt put forth Fordham's best finish, taking second in the 800 meters to earn Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in a season-best time of 1:51.83.
Fordham also scored in the 400 meters, 1,500 meters, the decathlon, the 4x100 relay, and the 4x400 relay.
Christopher Lyons placed sixth in the 400 meters in a season-best time of 48.64 seconds, followed by Sean Atkinson in seventh place (48.79), while Kevin Fitzgerald was seventh in the 1,500 meters in a season-best time of 3:53.16. Augustus Gleason was the final individual scorer, as he was fifth in the decathlon with a score of 5,775 points.
In the relays, the men's 4x100 relay team of Michael Bongiorno, Frank Massaro, Atkinson, and Lyons placed seventh in a season-best time of 42.78 seconds, while the men's 4x400 relay, consisting of Lyons, Schmidt, Atkinson, and John Cosgrove, took fourth overall in a season-best time of 3:15.32.
Other competitors on day two included Tim Hutchinson (12th - 1:54.17) and Bernard Moore (18th - 1:58.09) in the 800 meters, Paul Szczepaniak (10th - 4:00.45) and Thomas Kelly (12th - 4:00.78) in the 1,500 meters, Tom Papain (10th 15:29.36), Sam Stuart (17th - 16:05.71), and Julian Saad (22nd - 16:45.60) in the 5,000 meters, Michael Rossi (15th - 57.53), Daniel Clemens (18th - 58.78), and Daniel Chediak (20th - 1:00.81) in the 400 meter hurdles, and Vincent Servello (11th - 4,902 pts.) in the decathlon.
The Fordham track & field team will next be in action on May 8th, when they compete at Rutgers University.
