Women's Soccer Hosts Student Soccer Tournament to Raise Funds For St. Jude Children's Hospital

May 10, 2010

Bronx, N.Y. - This April, the Fordham women's soccer team hosted a 3-on-3 Co-Ed Indoor Soccer tournament at the Lombardi Center Fieldhouse, raising funds for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

"The girls did a great job in running this event," said head coach Ness Selmani. "It was a lot of fun with competitive soccer. The girls were fantastic."

"I am very proud of the work our team did to host such a fun and successful charity soccer tournament," said Assistant Coach Casey Sommers. "We appreciated all the talented participants who came out to support the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, and we look forward to building on this event in the future."

The tournament was a great success, as the team crowned a champion from a pretty healthy field of teams, and raised $400 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Prizes for the tournament were generously donated by Fordham Hospitality Services and the Ram Van Office.

"The tournament itself was awesome and received a lot of enthusiasm from those involved," said sophomore Michaela Murphy. "Soccer is such a huge sport here among the students that hopefully in upcoming years we will be able to expand the tournament to exceed the funds raised this year."

"It was really fun to be in charge of the tournament because it seemed that everyone had a good time," said junior Michelle Ancelj. "The final game got really intense and people seemed to be into the tournament. Not only did everyone on our team help to organize the tournament, but everyone also got their friends involved."

The funds raised by the tournament were donated to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, which is dedicated to childhood cancer research.

"St. Jude is a great hospital to raise money for. Our athletic department has donated a lot of money to St. Jude's and our team wanted to make our own contribution," said Ancelj. "I remember a couple years ago at the breakfast for champions, we watched a movie on St. Jude's and it was really moving. It is nice to put a face on the people we are helping."

Murphy agreed with Ancelj, saying, "We decided to give the money to St. Jude because the E-Board has a great presence on campus and works for a phenomenal cause. St. Jude Research Hospital is the only hospital in the world solely dedicated to childhood cancer research. It allows the sick child and family to stay in Memphis, Tennessee, where the hospital is located, without any costs to the family. The research done there has made tremendous strides in the survival rates of many terminal cancers."
