The Fordham track & field team opened competition at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Outdoor Track & Field Championship on Saturday at the UMass Track & Field Complex in Amherst, Massachusetts. Through day one, the Fordham men are eighth out of 11 teams, while the women's team is eighth out of 12 teams.
Currently, Dayton leads the women's competition with 50 points, followed by Richmond (47.75), Rhode Island (43), Temple (37.5), Massachusetts (32), Duquesne (25.25), Charlotte (24), Fordham (15), La Salle (14), Xavier (12.75), Saint Joseph's (7.75), and Saint Louis (3).
Most of Fordham's points on day one came courtesy of Brigid Moriarty. Moriarty, who had been ill for most of the week leading up to the Atlantic 10 Championship, won the 10,000 meter run in a time of 35:53.16, earning ten points for the Rams.
The other five points came from the women's 4x800 relay team, consisting of Kelly Connolly, Kerri Gallagher, Kerry Kwalwasser, and Catherine Groene, as the group placed fourth in a time of 9:04.61.
In addition to Moriarty and the 4x800 relay, Sherilyn Groeninger was 14th in the 100 meter dash trials (12.53, Courtnay Newman was 16th in the 100 meter hurdles (15.75) and 11th in the high jump (5'1"), and Elisabeth Warren was 14th in the long jump (17' 5 ½").
On the men's side, Temple is the team points leader with 71, followed by Massachusetts (66), Charlotte (52), Rhode Island (40), Richmond (20), Duquesne (19), La Salle (17), Fordham (13), Saint Louis (6), Xavier (6), and Saint Joseph's (5).
The Rams scored in three events, including two in the 3000 meter steeplechase. Brian Riley took fifth in the event in 9:29.43, while John Korevec placed seventh in 9:42.56. Pat McDonough also placed 13th in the event in a time of 10:15.06.
Fordham also scored in the high jump and the men's 4x800 relay. Kyle Kesses, a walk on from the men's basketball team, took eighth overall, clearing 6' 6 ¼", while the relay team of Tim Hutchinson, Brian Schmidt, John Cosgrove, and Kevin Fitzgerald took third in 7:27.16.
In addition to the scorers, Michael Bongiorno (11.48) and Frank Massaro (11.51) were 22nd and 23rd in the 100 meter dash trials, Daniel Chediak (15.77) and Daniel Clemens (16.12) were 14th and 16th in the 100 meter hurdles trials, and Pat Brown was 13th in the hammer throw (147' 6 ½").
Day one also saw the first half of the men's decathlon with Augustus Gleason and Vincent Servello competing for Fordham. Gleason is currently fifth overall with a score of 3,124 points, while Servello is tenth with 2,532 points. Both are chasing Charlotte's Jake Wainwright, who leads the competition with 3,761 points.
Day two of the competition will begin at 9:00 AM on Sunday.
