Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham University football student-athletes will soon have a new place to call home. Construction started on April 5th on a new locker room that will be located in the basement of the Rose Hill Gym in a space formerly occupied by the Rose Hill Gym pool. The new locker room is slated to be ready for the 2010 season.
"The new locker room is a tremendous addition to our program," said head coach Tom Masella. "I would like to thank Beryl and John Lyons and one of our former football players for their generosity which helped make this project a reality. The new facility will greatly benefit the Fordham football program."
The Football Locker Room will be named the "Beryl and John Lyons Football Locker Room" thanks to a $1 million donation from John Lyons which was matched by another $1 million gift from a former football player who wishes to remain anonymous.
The new space will feature over 90 lockers, wide screen televisions and a theater-type viewing area for the team. The room will also feature two sealed lockers to honor Vince Lombardi and Bill Tierney. When finished, the room will be approximately 4,800 square feet, more than four times larger than the current locker room.
Photos will be posted throughout the spring and summer so be sure to check back here on a regular basis for updates on the construction of the new football locker room!
Put your mark on the new Fordham football locker room
Fordham Athletics is proud of its long standing football tradition and that tradition is built on the efforts of numerous alumni and supporters. Fordham has had many outstanding individual student-athletes and teams and today's student-athletes are striving to emulate that success. It is important for the current student-athletes to know the great history and support of the Fordham football family. Now is your chance to bring the past alive and continue the tradition. As part of the new football locker room project Fordham is offering former student-athletes, fans and supporters of the program the opportunity to purchase a locker. This naming opportunity will provide a meaningful contribution to the team, as well as remind today's players and coaches of the personal and team history that preceded them. This is a great way to be recognized and give back to Fordham football at the same time.
Below are the locker naming opportunities that are available. Your name will be engraved on an attractive plate affixed inside your locker with your years on the team or class year.
Former Player Locker $1,000
This opportunity is only open to those who played at least one full year of Fordham football.
This is a great chance to become part of the team again and commemorate your playing career. Your name will be affixed inside the locker of the number you wore during your playing days. Former Player Lockers are also available to be named "In Memory" of deceased members of the Fordham football family.
"Spirit of Fordham" Locker (#28 Retired): $1000
The "Spirit of Fordham" Locker is housed at #28, the retired number of Bill Tierney who tragically passed away while preparing for our Homecoming game vs. Lafayette in the fall of 1996. Annually the Tierney Award is presented to a player who represents the generosity of spirit that Bill so unselfishly exemplified. This locker is available all the fans and supporters of the program regardless of ever having played football and will be a sealed display case of the recent history of the program. Your name will be affixed inside this locker representing the spirit and pride of our fans for the program.
Legacy Locker (#40 Retired) $5000
The best known name throughout the history of this program is Vince Lombardi #40 from our famed Seven Blocks of Granite. To honor our history and his memory this locker will be sealed as memorabilia display case to remind current student-athletes and inform recruits of the proud traditions of Fordham football. Your name will be affixed inside the locker of this all-time great Ram as leadership supporters to the football program.
Your locker is considered a charitable contribution to Fordham Athletics. For more information on your locker or information on donating to any of Fordham's sport teams please contact Ryan St. Germain, assistant director of development, athletics at (212) 636-6527 or stgermain@fordham.edu
Now is the time to leave a lasting memory of your accomplishments for future Rams, as well as help the student-athletes of tomorrow reach their goals. Your efforts helped Fordham football get to where they are today. Leave your legacy now and help them reach new heights.
