Rowing Competes at Murphy Cup

Philadelphia, Pa. - The Fordham University crew traveled to Philadelphia on Saturday to compete in the 28th Annual Murphy Cup Regatta on the Schuylkill River. The second largest intercollegiate regatta held on the Schuykill, the Murphy Cup features competitors from 35 colleges, 28 cities and nine states.

Named after John Murphy, a Temple rower who was tragically killed in a hit-and-run accident in the Summer of 1980, the Murphy Cup Regatta was established in 1982.

The Fordham women entered four shells in the competition, the varsity 8, the junior varsity 8, the novice 8 and the varsity 4.

The women's varsity eight overcame a rough start in their heat to place third, but qualified for the petite final on time, with the sixth fastest qualifying time of the 15 entries. The Rams missed qualifying for the grand final by finishing a length behind Drexel and just .23 second behind Colgate. In the final, the Rams has a much better start and battled Delaware down the course, falling short at the finish by just .09 second, taking eight place overall.

The second varsity eight finished fourth in their heat, the most competitive of the day in which less than 13 seconds separated first through fourth places, behind Saint Joseph's, Delaware and Colgate. The women's varsity four, also a new lineup, made a solid showing, taking second place in their heat behind Bucknell. Fordham's time was eighth among the 20 entries, and tops among Atlantic-10 schools in the regatta. The novice eight finished third in a very competitive heat, behind Navy and George Washington, posting the eighth best qualifying time among 16 entries.

The Fordham junior varsity 8 took fourth in its heat in a time of 7:01.94 while the novice 8 placed third in its heat in 7:10.55. The varsity 4 was second in its heat, finishing behind Bucknell in a time of 7:28.15.

The Fordham crew will next be in action on Saturday, April 10th as they compete at the Knecht Cup in Camden, N.J.
