Fordham's Brienne Ryan Named All-American by CollegeSwimming.com

CollegeSwimming.com's 2010 Division I Mid-Major All-America Swimming teams

Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham University freshman swimmer Brienne Ryan (New Windsor, N.Y./Cornwall) was named 2010 Division I Mid-Major All-America by CollegeSwimming.com it was announced today.

Ryan wrapped up a successful freshman campaign at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championship in February by earning Second Team All-Atlantic 10 honors in the 100 and 200 backstroke while leading the Rams to their first ever team title. She also received First Team All-Conference accolades as a member of both the and 200 medley relay and 800 freestyle relay and Second Team honors with the 400 free and 400 medley relays.

In the 100 backstroke at A-10's, Ryan set the school mark in the for the fifth time this year, placing second overall in an NCAA "B" cut time of 54.21 seconds while in the 200 backstroke, Ryan earned All-Atlantic 10 honors for the fifth time during the championship, placing second in a time of 1:59.56. Earlier in the preliminaries, she broke the school record in the event in an NCAA "B" cut time of 1:58.42.

Ryan also broke the school record in the 50 freestyle, taking third overall in 23.57 seconds at the championships. She broke the previous record of 23.71 seconds, set by Kelly Bunster last year.

The 800 free relay set a school and Atlantic 10 record at the meet as the Rams successfully defended their 800 free relay title with Tressa Dunn, Kelly Bunster, Ryan, and Caitlin Napoli winning the event in an Atlantic 10 record time of 7:20.82. The previous mark of 7:24.25 was set by Fordham last year.

Ryan also competed with the 200 and 400 medley relays as well as the 400 free relay. The 200 medley relay of Ryan, Nicole Marshall, Bunster and Dunn posted the second-best time in Atlantic 10 history, winning the event in a school record time of 1:40.89. Fordham's previous school record was 1:43.51, set last year.

In the 400 medley relay, Ryan, Marshall, Bunster, and Dunn posted a school record and NCAA "B" cut time of 3:42.86, taking second to Richmond's time of 3:42.11.

Ryan teamed with Bunster, Dunn and Napoli in the 400 freestyle relay, the final event of the championship, placing second in a school record and NCAA"B" cut time of 3:23.72, securing Fordham's first Atlantic 10 title in a women's sport.

A total of 183 swimmers were awarded Honorable Mention status by earning NCAA 'B' time standards during the 2009-10 season. Mid-Major institutions are designated as colleges or universities that are not affiliated with a Bowl Championship Series (BCS) conference as well as those institutions awarding less than half of the maximum-allowable scholarships (seven for women, five for men).
