The Fordham University crew successfully defended its Metropolitan Intercollegiate Rowing Association Spring Championship title on Sunday at the Orchard Beach Lagoon, finishing four points ahead of Army in the team scoring. Individually, the Rams took gold in the varsity 8 and novice 8 events.
Fordham finished with 122 team points among the 16 teams competing, four points ahead of Army (118) and 29 in front of third place Fairfield (95). NY Maritime (56), Iona (47.5), Binghamton (35), Albany (27), Stony Brook (18), Hofstra (13.5) and USMMA (12.0) rounded out the top ten teams.
In the varsity 8 competition, Fordham easily won its heat, finishing over nine seconds ahead of Binghamton to advance to the finals. The Fordham B shell also won its heat, beating Army to the line by more than ten seconds. In the finals, the Fordham A boat won in open water, crossing the line in a time of 7:06.0, in front of Binghamton (7:18.5), Fairfield (7:20.2), the Fordham B boat (7:22.3), Army (7:25.5) and Iona (7:54.7).
In the novice 8, which consisted of just a championship final, the Rams took first in a time of 7:34.8, ahead of Fairfield (7:27.8), Iona (8:04.6), Sacred Heart (8:10.2), Army (8:23.1) and Binghamton (8:40.7).
The Fordham women also entered a shell in the varsity 4, taking third place in the event. The Fordham varsity 4 advanced to the championship final by winning its heat in a time of 8:02.0, beating Stony Brook (8:07.2), Fairfield (8:08.7) and NYU (8:29.2) to the line. Army took first in the finals, followed by Stony Brook, Fordham, Sacred Heart, Fairfield and Iona.
The Fordham men's club team also contributed to the win, taking first in the varsity 4, varsity 8 and second varsity 8.
The Rams will next be in action on Saturday, May 1st, as they compete at the ECAC Metro Championships on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
