Box Score

Dayton, Ohio - In the series finale at Dayton, Fordham recouped from a couple of early miscues to take a 7-2 lead, heading into the bottom of the seventh inning on Sunday. But the wind, weather, and Time Warner Cable Stadium quickly shifted against the Rams in the final three innings, as Cole Tyrell's two-out fly ball just cleared the left field wall for a two-run home run to give Dayton an 8-7 win.

With the loss, Fordham falls to 14-25 overall, 8-7 in the Atlantic 10, while Dayton improves to 18-23 overall, 7-8 in the league.

After a scoreless top of the first by Fordham, the game was halted for a 20-minute rain relay before Dayton could get their first at bat of the game. Dayton then took advantage of two Fordham errors in the bottom of the first to score twice for a 2-0 lead. With runners at first and second, Dunsmore singled through the left side, scoring Joe Gayda from second, after he reached on an error. On the play, Fordham's Ryan Lee overran the ball, which allowed Zach Jacob to score from first.

Dayton looked to add to that lead in the second, as the Flyers had runners at second and third with one out. But Fordham starter Daniel Munday struck out both Gayda and Mitchell Nelson to end the threat.

Fordham cut the lead in half in the top of the third when Ryan Maghini reached on an infield single, moved to third on a double by Ryan Lee, and scored on a ground out by Brian Kownacki.

Nick Martinez then continued his stellar weekend with a solo home run to right center, his first of the season, to tie the game at two in the top of the fourth inning. It was Martinez's second career home run, the first coming in his first career at bat last season at Florida Atlantic.

Fordham then grabbed its first lead of the game in the top of the fifth inning, capitalizing on two Dayton errors. With runners at first and second and two outs, Chris Walker lifted a fly ball to short right field. Dayton's second baseman Zach Jacob went back to make the play, but dropped the ball, bobbled it, and had it hit the ground, allowing both Maghini and Ryan McCrann to score on the play and give the Rams a 4-2 edge.

The Rams added to that lead stringing together four straight singles in the sixth to plate two runs for a 6-2 lead. After a pair of fly outs, Lee and Kownacki both singled up the middle for Fordham. McCrann followed with a single through the right side to score Lee with Kownacki going to third. Walker capped the frame with an RBI-single up the middle for a 6-2 advantage.

Fordham continued to have success with two outs as in the top of the seventh Como singled up the middle and stole second. Following a walk to Maghini, Lee singled back up the box to score Como from second for a 7-2 lead.

Dayton would rally in the bottom of the seventh inning, scoring four times off Fordham relievers Joseph Charest and Rich Anastasi. Charest gave up a two-run home run to Roesinger, while Anastasi gave up three walks and a hit, which turned into two more runs, as the Flyers pulled to within one, 7-6. Fordham's Jordan Grangard would stop the rally though, getting Jonathan Castine on a strikeout, while Brian Blasik grounded into a 5-4-3 double play, the third of the game for Fordham.

After a scoreless eighth, Fordham still led by one as Grangard faced the 2-3-4 hitters of Dayton. Nelson led off with a ground ball off Grangard's glove, but the ball went right to Martinez for the 1-4-3 putout. After a walk to Jacob, Dunsmore lined a shot to center with Mike Mobbs making a diving catch for the second out of the inning. Cole Tyrell then hit a high fly ball to left, which looked like the final out of the inning, but the wind carried the ball just over the left field wall for his seventh home run of the season to give Dayton an 8-7 victory.

Grangard (0-2) threw 2.2 innings of relief, striking out three, while Munday pitched the first four innings, tying a career-high with six strikeouts.

At the plate, Lee was 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, while McCrann had a pair of hits. Walker finished with three RBI in the game.

The Rams will next be in action on Wednesday, April 28th, as they travel into Manhattan to face Columbia for a doubleheader starting at 2:00 PM.
