Philadelphia, Pa. - The Fordham men's and women's outdoor track and field teams opened competition at the 2010 Penn Relays on Thursday where the women's 4x100 relay broke a school record and Brigid Moriarty turned in Fordham's second fastest time ever in the 3000m.
The women's 4x100 relay of Sherilyn Groeninger, Catherine Groene, Kelly Connolly, Elisabeth Warren placed fifth in their heat, 72nd overall, in a time of 48.93, breaking the school record of 49.43 that the foursome set just a week ago at the 2010 Metropolitan Championships. The group broke the previous school record of 49.67 set in 1991 by Melissa St. Rose, Toni Agard, Kim Reilly, and Kristen Gecewicz.
Brigid Moriarty was the lone individual to compete on the first day, placing 12th in the College Women's Championship 3000m race in a time of 9:51.21, the second fastest women's 3000m time in school history, behind only Lauren Gubicza's 1992 record of 9:12.18. The time also qualified Moriarty for the ECAC Championships.
Also on Thursday, the women's 4x400 relay of Connolly, Kerri Gallagher, Groene and Warren placed fourth in their heat, 57th overall, in a time of 3:54.92.
The only Rams competing on Friday were the men's sprint medley relay of Sean Atkinson, Christopher Lyons, Brian Schmidt and Bernard Moore who placed fourth in their heat and 25th overall in a time of 3:27.69.
Fordham will wrap up competition at the Penn Relays in Saturday as the men's and women's 4x800m relays are in action. The women run at 1:55 p.m. while the men will begin at 4:20 p.m.
