The Fordham University men's tennis squad hosted Lafayette College on Tuesday on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts, falling to the Leopards by a score of 6-1. Alex DeRienzo was responsible for the Fordham points, winning at fourth singles in straight sets.
The Rams opened the match by dropping the doubles point as Lafayette took two of the three doubles matches. DeRienzo and Jordan Brown won at second doubles for Fordham over Steven Benezra and Justin Haar, 8-4. But Dallas Harting and Austin Shoup were upended at first doubles by Doug Gallagher and Kyle MacLelland, 8-6 and Rob Evans and Ben Kelly lost at third doubles to Scott Gelbman and Andrew Morris, 8-3.
In singles action, Alex DeRienzo was victorious at fourth singles over Haar in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-2.
The Rams almost picked up another point at first singles as Harting dropped the first set to Gallagher, 6-1, before coming back to win the second, 7-5. But Harting dropped the super tiebreaker to Gallagher, 7-1.
Fordham dropped the other four singles matches in straight sets as Maloney fell to Benezra at the second position (6-3, 6-2), Shoup lost to Gelbman at the third spot (6-2, 6-2), Ken Fukumoto was upended by Morris (6-4, 6-4) and Eli Plangger fell to James Murphy at the sixth position (6-1, 6-4).
