Bronx, N.Y. - Fordham University will be the recipient of four brand new squash courts, thanks to the generosity of the CitySquash program. Construction began in early April and the new courts should be ready around the end of August. Follow the construction on fordhamsports.com as we will update this page with photos all throughout the construction process.
When finished, the project will consist of four regulation sized squash courts in Fordham's Lombardi Center. The second floor of the courts will consist of greatly enhanced gallery viewing. There will also be glass walls on the sides of courts #1 and #2 with a hallway between the two which will include a spiral staircase to the upper floor.
The courts will be utilized by the Fordham varsity team as well as the participants of CitySquash, a not-for-profit after-school enrichment program based in the Bronx at Fordham University. The organization helps motivated and talented young people from economically disadvantaged households in the Bronx fulfill their academic, athletic and personal potential.
Over the past five years, 32 CitySquash participants have won scholarships to private day schools in the city and boarding schools outside of New York. Also, all of the students who started with the program in 2002 are now in college, attending such school as Cornell, Wesleyan and Hobart and William Smith.
At the 2010 Breakfast for Champions, the Fordham University Student Athlete Advisory Committee helped the CitySquash with a $1,500 donation to the program.
"CitySquash is such a great and unique program that totally transforms the kids," said Bridget Carroll, FC '10, President of SAAC and a member of the Cross Country/Track and Field programs. "I started tutoring with them in January and witnessed firsthand how they respond to having a Fordham student-athlete with them in class."
Representing CitySquash at the 2010 Breakfast of Champions was Tim Wyant, Executive Director, and Sanford Schwartz, Founder and Chairman of CitySquash.
Wyant, a four-time All-American and two-time captain on the varsity squash team at Harvard College who played professionally for two years, was hired by CitySquash's Board of Directors in 2002 to launch and run the organization.
Wyant spoke of the CitySquash program at the 2010 Breakfast for Champions and how it works with the local elementary, middle and high schools to get the students involved in the sport, as well as helping them with academics and getting them involved in community service.
