Pennsauken, N.J. - The Fordham University rowing squad competed at the 15th annual Atlantic 10 Women's Rowing Championship on the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J. on Saturday afternoon where the Rams took fifth place in the team standings. Individually, junior Catherine Helmer earned First Team All-Conference honors while junior Alyssa Sunofsky earned Second Team accolades following the championship.
The University of Rhode Island captured its second-ever A-10 Championship rowing title after earning 53 points with Massachusetts finishing second with 40 points. Saint Joseph's and Temple tied for third with 39 points apiece while Fordham (31) was fifth, George Washington sixth (30), Dayton (19) seventh and Duquesne and La Salle tied for eighth with eight points apiece.
In the premier event, the Varsity 8, Fordham placed fourth in the grand championship in a time of 6:45.25, almost nine seconds ahead of Massachusetts and well in front of George Washington. Rhode Island won the event followed by Saint Joseph's and Temple.
In the second varsity 8 petite championship race, Fordham beat Duquesne to the finish line in a time of 7:23.05, over five seconds in front of the Dukes, to win the event and earn the Rams six team points.
Fordham also scored in the varsity 4, novice 4 and novice 8. The varsity 4 shell picked up seven points with a third place finish in the grand championship. The Rams crossed the line in a time of 8:03.57, ahead of Temple, Saint Joseph's and George Washington.
In the novice 8 race, Fordham took fourth in a time of 7:34.15, in front of Duquesne and Temple, while the novice 4 also placed fifth, in a time of 8:42.35, well ahead of Dayton.
The Fordham crew will next be in action on Sunday, April 25th, as they compete at the 2010 Metropolitan Spring Championships at the Orchard Beach Lagoon.
