Continuing the theme from yesterday's game, the Fordham bats came through in the clutch for the second straight day, highlighted by a bases clearing double by Michael Taddei, giving Fordham a 4-3 come from behind win over the Saint Louis Billikens at Houlihan Park.
With the win, Fordham improves to 12-21 overall, 7-4 in the Atlantic 10, while Saint Louis drops to 18-18 overall, 6-5 in the conference.
With Fordham trailing 3-1 in the bottom of the eighth inning, the Rams mounted their comeback effort by loading the bases with one out on singles by P.J. Como, Chris Walker, and Mike Mobbs. Michael Taddei then cleared the bases with a double to the left center gap, giving Fordham their first lead of the game.
Fordham's Brando Casalicchio (1-2) shut the door on the Billikens' rally in the ninth, as he pitched two scoreless innings of relief for his first career win at Fordham.
Saint Louis led for the entire game, heading into the eighth, as they opened the scoring with an RBI-ground ball by Nick Blackwell with the bases loaded in the second inning, scoring Jon Myers from third.
Fordham responded with a run in the third inning, taking advantage of two Saint Louis errors. Ryan Lee started the frame by reaching on an error. Como then hit a ground ball to third, which the third baseman threw away, trying to get Lee at second. After Como stole second to put runners at second and third, Ryan McCrann drove in Lee with a single to left.
The Billikens quickly regained the lead with two runs in the top of the fourth, making it a 3-1 game. With one out, Blackwell and Zach Miller reached base on back-to-back singles. Mike Levine then hit a ground rule double down the right field line, scoring Blackwell. J.D. Dunn followed with an RBI-single through the left side to score Miller.
Fordham starter Max Krakowiak was able to fight his way through seven innings, keeping the Rams within striking distance, allowing just two base runners over the fifth, sixth, and seventh innings. In all, Krakowiak allowed three runs on six hits with five strikeouts, receiving a no-decision.
At the plate, Taddei was 2-for-4 with a double and three RBI, while McCrann had a three-hit game. Mobbs and Como each had a pair of hits as well.
For the second straight game, Saint Louis' pitcher threw a complete game but fell short of the win, as Alex Alemann allowed three earned runs on 11 hits in eight innings with six strikeouts.
The final game of this series will take place on Sunday at Houlihan Park, beginning at 12:00 PM.
