NFCA/Louisville Slugger Division I Player of the Week Release (HTML)
STARKVILLE, Miss. - With the latest edition of the USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll released by officials on Tuesday, the Fordham softball team received 15 votes to be the fifth team out of the Top 25, gaining one more vote than last week's 14.
The Rams have received votes in the poll since March 2, the first in-season vote for Fordham in program history. The Rams are one of 14 teams that lie just outside the Top 25. With 15 votes they are the fifth highest, behind BYU, Oregon, Hawaii and Texas Tech.
Junior Beckah Wiggins (Conklin, N.Y./Susquehanna) also got mentioned in this week's Louisville Slugger/NFCA Division I National Player of the Week voting. Although, Boston University's April Setterlund earned the award after a 13-for-14 week with eight runs, 17 RBI, two doubles, one triple, four homeruns, two stolen bases and five walks for the Terriers, Wiggins was the only other player mentioned in this week's press release. Wiggins earned Atlantic 10 Player of the Week honors on March 29, after her 20 RBI week of five homeruns, including two grandslams and batting .813 in 16 at bats. Wiggns set/tied six of Fordham's all-time single game records.
Fordham is 23-6 overall, 2-0 in Atlantic 10 play, after a 4-0 week where the Rams outscored opponents 54-5.
In addition to the USA Today/NFCA Top 25, Fordham also received 31 votes in the Ultimate College Softball Poll and are just one spot out of the Top 25. The Rams are also receiving 10 votes in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, up from three in the March 23 edition of the poll.
The Washington Huskies remain in the No. 1 spot for the eighth consecutive week with 29 votes. Washington recorded all 30 votes for five-straight weeks. Florida received one vote for first place.
The USA Today/NFCA Division I Top 25 Poll is voted on by NCAA Division I head coaches, one representing each conference. 2010 records are shown, first-place votes are in parentheses.
