Richmond, Va. -
On Saturday, it was a stellar pitching performance that got Fordham its first Atlantic 10 victory of the season. On Sunday, it was the long ball that got win #2, as Michael Taddei, Ryan McCrann, and P.J. Como all homered in an 11-6 win over Richmond at Pitt Field.
With the win, Fordham goes to 6-16 overall, 2-1 in the Atlantic 10, while Richmond falls to 12-10 overall, 1-2 in league play. The victory was also the 150th coaching victory for Fordham head coach Nick Restaino.
Fordham opened with a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning, as Ryan Maghini came up with a two-run single down the left field line, scoring Michael Taddei and Brian Kownacki, who singled and doubled, respectively.
Richmond then grabbed a 3-2 lead with single runs in the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings. In the fourth, the Spiders loaded the bases on two singles and a walk, and scored a run on a walk to Robby Massar.
In the fifth, Richmond tied the game at two on RBI-double by Mike Mergenthaler, scoring Adam McConnell, who also doubled.
The Spiders then grabbed a 3-2 lead on a solo home run to left field by Chris Cowell.
Fordham then battled back to take a 6-3 lead with a four-run seventh inning. Nick Martinez led off the frame with a double to left and was sacrificed to third. Martinez then tried to score from third on a ground ball by Mike Mobbs, but was called out at home. After a single by McCrann, Chris Walker reached second on an error by the Richmond third baseman, allowing Mobbs to score with McCrann going to third.
Richmond then went to the bullpen, as Ian Marshall entered the game for Matt Trent, but Marshall was greeted by a three-run home run to right by Taddei, his second in as many games, to put Fordham ahead, 6-3.
After the Spiders pulled within 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Fordham scored four more times in the eighth to open up a 10-4 advantage. In the frame, the Rams got an RBI-single by Ryan Lee, while McCrann connected for a three-run home run to right, his first of the season.
Fordham's P.J. Como then added a solo home run to left in the ninth inning, his first of the season, to put Fordham ahead, 11-4.
Richmond did get a pair of runs back on a home run by Billy Barber and an RBI-single by McConnell, but that would not be enough as the Rams won by five.
Ryan DeMartino (2-0) picked up the win in relief of Fordham starter Brian Pendergast. Pendergast went 5.2 innings, allowing three runs on seven hits with six strikeouts. DeMartino, Jordan Grangard, Brando Casalicchio, and John Flanagan were able to finish off the win, as they gave up just three hits in 3.1 innings of relief.
At the plate, McCrann and Taddei were both 2-for-5 with a home run and three RBI, while Martinez had three hits. Maghini was also 2-for-5 with two RBI.
The Fordham baseball team will next be in action on Tuesday, March 30th, as they play at Fairfield, beginning at 3:30 PM.
