The Fordham women's tennis team ventured into Manhattan on Friday and were shutout by Columbia, 7-0.
The match opened with Columbia taking the doubles point by winning all threee doubles matches. Fordham's Martina Featherston and Sarah Tremaine fell at first doubles to Nicole Bartnik and Katrina Kovacevic, 8-3, while Taylor Holt and Bethany Boyle were upended at second doubles, 8-0, by Natasha Makarova/Chelsea Davis and Elizabeth Stall and Jennifer Mullen lost at third doubles to Natalia Christenson and Eliza Matache, 8-2.
In singles play, the Lions won all six matches, five in straight sets. Featherston almost pulled off a win for the Rams at second singles, winning the first set from Matache, 6-1, before dropping the second, 6-0, and the third, 6-1.
In other singles action, Tremaine fell to Davis at first singles (6-1, 6-3), Boyle lost to Kovacevic at the third position (6-3, 6-3), Mullen was blanked by Carling Donovan at the fourth spot (6-0, 6-0), Holt fell to Diana Shapoval at fifth singles (6-3, 7-5) and Brittany Russell dropped sixth singles to Caroline Constable (6-2, 6-1).
The Rams return to action on Saturday afternoon as they host Saint Joseph's University on the Hawthron/Rooney Courts at 12:00 PM.
