Bronx, N.Y. -
Fordham University student-athletes Justin Coombs (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) and Ryan Coombs (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) were recognized for their athletic and academic accomplishments by being named to the 2009-10 Atlantic 10 Men's Swimming and Diving Academic All-Conference team.
Of the 22 sports sponsored by the Atlantic 10, seven are winter sports: men's and women's basketball, women's gymnastics, men's and women's swimming & diving, and men's and women's indoor track & field. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a grade point average of at least 3.00 and be a starter or key reserve on his/her team. Voting is conducted by the Atlantic 10 Conference's sports information directors. The number of players selected to a team reflects the standard-sized team in that sport.
Ryan Coombs, a senior chemistry major, earns his third straight Atlantic 10 Men's Swimming and Diving Academic All-Conference team (freshmen are not eligible for the award). This winter, he won the 200 butterfly at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championships for the second straight year, garnering First Team All-Conference honors, and placed fourth in the 100 butterfly and seventh in the 50 free. Ryan was also a member of four relays that scored at A-10s, including the 400 medley relay which broke a school record with a time of 3:22.39, surpassing the old mark of 3:23.95 set last year and finishing in second place for Second Team All-Conference honors.
On the year, Ryan Coombs recorded Fordham's fastest 50, 100 and 200 butterfly times.
Justin Coombs, a senior business administration major who was also named Academic All-Atlantic 10 in 2009, placed fourth in both the 100 and 200 freestyle at the 2010 Atlantic 10 Championships. He also took tenth in the 50 free and was a member of four relays that scored at A-10s, including the 400 medley relay which broke a school record with a time of 3:22.39, surpassing the old mark of 3:23.95 set last year and finishing in second place for Second Team All-Conference honors.
On the year, Justin Coombs turned in Fordham's fastest 100 and 200 free times.
The Fordham men's swimming and diving team wrapped up the season with a fourth place showing at the Atlantic 10 Championships, tying for its best-ever finish at the championships.
