Fordham University freshman forward Chris Gaston (Palisades Park, N.J./St. Anthony) was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Week it was announced by the conference office today. This is the second straight week in which Gaston has been named A-10 Rookie of the Week, the fourth time this season.
In a pair of games on the week, Gaston averaged 27.5 points, 10.5 rebounds and four assists, shooting 53.6% from the field (15-28). On Saturday in a 77-72 loss to Charlotte, the first place team in the conference, Gaston netted 32 points and added 12 rebounds for his 13th double-double of the year. The 32 points tied his season-high while he also added a season-best six assists.
In a loss at Xavier last Sunday, Gaston scored 23 points and grabbed nine boards, shooting 11-for-14 from the free throw stripe, while also adding three steals and two blocks.
On the year, Gaston, who has scored at least 20 points ten times this season, is third in the Atlantic 10 in scoring, averaging 18.4 ppg, and is ranked second in rebounding, averaging 10.7 rpg. His 13 doubles-doubles is the second most for any Atlantic 10 player and tied for eighth in the NCAA. Gaston also leads the team and is ranked eighth in the conference in blocks with 35 (1.7 blocks/game) and is eighth in the league in field goal percentage, converting 142 of his 313 shoots (45.4%). His 387 points in 2009-10 is the fourth highest total for a Fordham freshman in school history.
The Rams will next be in action on Wednesday, February 10th, as they travel to St. Bonaventure, N.Y., to take on the St. Bonaventure University Bonnies in an Atlantic 10 contest at 7:00 PM. The game can be heard live on WFUV (90.7 FM) and www.wfuv.org.
