The 2010 Atlantic 10 Track & Field Championships are underway at Mackal Fieldhouse in Kingston, Rhode Island, as most of day set up the finals races on Saturday, which begin at 9:00 AM.
The Fordham women are tenth out of 11 teams on day one, while the men's team is 10th out of ten teams
Of the scoring events on day one, Fordham's Brigid Moriarty was the lone individual scorer, as she placed fourth in the 5,000 meter run in an ECAC qualifying time of 17:24.94.
The men's lone scorer was the distance medley relay of Sam Stuart, Nick Delligatti, Michael Rossi, and Brian Riley, which placed fifth in a time of 10:21.05
In the preliminary races, a total of five Rams have qualified for the finals, led by Brian Schmidt in the 800 meters. Schmidt ran the top preliminary time in the 800, clocking in at 1:55.61, over two seconds better than the second place competitor.
Christopher Lyons and Kevin Fitzgerald also qualified for finals on Saturday, as Lyons finished sixth in the preliminaries of the 500 meters in his best time of the season (1:05.59), while Fitzgerald was fourth in the 1000 meter preliminaries in 2:31.96.
On the women's side, Kerri Gallagher and Sherilyn Groeninger made the finals of the 1,000 meters and 55 meter dash, respectively. Gallagher was third in the 1,000 meter preliminaries in 2:59.53, while Groeninger tied her own school record in the 55 meter dash, registering a time of 7.33 seconds, which qualified her sixth overall.
The women's pentathlon and men's heptathlon also got underway on Friday.
In the pentathlon, Courtnay Newman finished 11th overall with a score of 2,905 points. Newman finished third in the shot put (34' 4 ¾"), fourth in the high jump (5' 1 ¼"), 10th in the 55 meter hurdles (9.04), 14th in the 800 meters (2:49.89), and 16th in the long jump (14' 7").
In the heptathlon, Rhode Island's Andrew Reigstad leads the competition through four events with a score of 2,808 points. Fordham's Augustus Gleason is currently fourth with 2,424 points, having taken third in the shot put (36' 0"), fourth in the long jump (19' 7 ½") and high jump (6' ½"), and eighth in the 55 meter dash (7.20). Vincent Servello is seventh overall with a score of 2,241 points, after placing fourth in the 55 meter dash (7.14), fifth in the long jump (19' 4"), eighth in the high jump (5' 7 ¾"), and 11th in the shot put (31' 6 ½").
