Poughkeepsie, N.Y. - Even though there's snow on the ground, the Fordham University women's tennis squad managed to open its 2010 spring season on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Rams it didn't open as expected as Fordham fell to Vassar, 8-1, in Poughkeepsie.

The match opened with Vassar taking the doubles point, winning all three doubles matches. Martina Featherston and Sarah Tremaine fell at first doubles to Vassar's Nicole Pontee and Joy Backer, 8-3, while Bethany Boyle and Taylor Holt were upended at second doubles by Jennifer Beckerman and Nicole Block, 8-2. At third doubles, Fordham's Jennifer Mullen and Brittany Russell lost to Natalie Santiago and Alyssa Roush, 8-2.

In singles play, Boyle picked up the lone Fordham point with a win over Backer at third singles. Boyle took the first set, 6-4, before dropping the second, 6-2, but came back to take the third set by a 7-5 score.

Tremaine had an extended first set against Pontee before falling 7-6 (11-9 in the tiebreaker). Pontee then took the second set, 6-1, to win the match.

The Rams will next be in action on Sunday, February 14th as they take on Army at West Point, N.Y. at noon.
