The Fordham track & field teams hosted the Fordham Season Opener on Friday night at the Lombardi Center Fieldhouse, kicking off their 2010-11 season. The Rams got off to a good start, posting eight event wins on the night.
The field events had four of the eight event wins, led by sophomore Courtnay Newman, who won the high jump, clearing 5' 3". She later captured first in the 60 meter hurdles in a time of 9.2 seconds.
In addition to Newman in the field events, junior Elisabeth Warren had a solid day, taking second in the high jump (4' 9"), second in the long jump (16' 5 ¾"), and third in the triple jump (34' 4"). She later ran in the sprint medley relay for the women, teaming up with Kelly Connolly, Darleen Eiermann, and Diane Bain. The Rams were just edged out for first by two-tenths of a second, finishing third overall in 4:22.9.
Connolly and Bain also ran in the 800 meters earlier in the meet, placing second (2:26.2) and fifth (2:27.0), respectively.
Senior Sherilyn Groeninger had the final event win for the women's side, as she won the 200 meters in 26.9 seconds. She also placed second in the 60 meter dash in 7.8 seconds.
In other top women's performances, freshman Averie Sheppard had a pair of second place finishes in the 60 meter hurdles (9.3 seconds) and the 400 meters (1:01.6), with freshman Taylor Jacob taking fifth in the shot put (34' ¾") and senior Jana Trenk placing fifth in the 3,000 meter run (11:43.6).
On the men's side, sophomore Sean Atkinson was a part of two event wins on the night. Individually, he won the 800 meter run in a time of 1:58.7, and later came back in the sprint medley relay with Nick Delligatti, Michael Rossi, and Ryan Polo to win that event in 3:42.0. Polo and Rossi finished right behind Atkinson in the 800 meters, taking 2nd (1:59.8) and third (2:00.1), respectively.
On top of the 800 meters, Fordham also had a 1-2 finish in the high jump, as senior Augustus Gleason cleared 6' 2 ¾" to win the event, while junior Kyle Kesses was second with a the height of 6' ¾". Gleason also posted a top five finish in the long jump, placing fourth (19' 4 ¾").
Vincent Servello and Patrick Brown were the final two event winners for the Rams. Servello took the triple jump title with a mark of 41' 1 ½", while Brown won the weight throw with a distance of 50' 10 ¼". Servello also had a third place finish in the long jump with a mark of 19' 5 ¼".
In other top men's performances, freshman Samuel Wicks tied for second in the 60 meter dash in 7.2 seconds, while junior Ken Baron was second in the pole vault, clearing 13' 5 ¼". Sophomore Keegan Talty was right behind Baron in third at 12' 5 ½", while fifth-year senior Paul Szczepaniak was third in the mile run in 4:27.6.
The Fordham track & field teams will next be in action on Friday, December 10th, when the team hosts its second meet of the season, the Christmas Classic, beginning at 3:00 PM in the Lombardi Center Fieldhouse.
