Bronx, N.Y. -
Fordham softball head coach Bridget Orchard announced the team's 2011 schedule today, as the Rams look to build on an incredible 2010 campaign, which ended with the team's first ever trip to the NCAA Championship. This year's schedule, which begins on February 12th at the Dot Richardson College Classic, ranks as the toughest ever for Fordham, as the Rams will play 14 NCAA tournament teams from a year ago.
On top of competing for its second straight trip to the NCAA Championship, the Rams will be competing for their ninth consecutive Atlantic 10 Championship tournament berth, and capture that elusive first Atlantic 10 title. The 2011 Atlantic 10 Championship is slated for May 11th-14th at the Phillips Softball Diamond in Charlotte, North Carolina.
Fordham will compete in five tournaments once again this season, which includes tournaments in Florida, California, and Virginia
Fordham opens its season at the Dot Richardson College Classic, February 12th-13th, hosted at the National Training Center Softball Complex in Clermont, Florida. Fordham is scheduled to play NCAA tournament participant Georgia Tech, as well as Florida Atlantic and Tennessee-Chattanooga.
The Rams make a return trip to Florida the following weekend to compete at the USF Tournament in Tampa. Fordham will meet NCAA Tournament team UAB, on top of games against Ole Miss, host South Florida, Indiana, and DePaul.
The Rams then travel cross country to California for the fourth straight year. The team will compete in the Cathedral City Classic, hosted at the Big League Dreams Complex by Oregon State in Cathedral City, California, from February 24th-26th. The tournament will feature a total of 24 NCAA Tournament teams, seven of the eight Women's College World Series teams, and 19 NFCA All-Americans. Fordham will face perennial national powers Texas and Washington on the opening day of the tournament, followed by games against Cal St. Fullerton, Nevada, and LSU.
Fordham's schedule doesn't lighten up the following weekend, March 4th-6th, as the team goes back to Florida and the Wide World of Sports Complex in Orlando for an event hosted by ESPN. Four of the Rams' five opponents at the tournament made the NCAA Championship last year, led by Alabama on day one. The second day will see games against Illinois State (NCAA) and Longwood, while the final day has games against NCAA teams, Notre Dame and North Carolina.
The Rams then have their final in-season tournament on March 12th-14th at the Cavalier Classic, hosted by Virginia in Charlottesville, Virginia. The Rams will play NCAA participants, Virginia (twice) and Syracuse (once), as well as Princeton (twice).
Fordham remains on the road for six more games before its home opener against Lehigh on March 30th. The Rams will play at Maryland (NCAA) on March 16th and at St. John's on March 23rd, while opening Atlantic 10 play at Saint Louis (Mar. 20) and at St. Bonaventure (Mar. 25-26).
With the Lehigh home opener, Fordham plays a total of eight straight home dates from March 30th through April 10th. Home contests will be against Lehigh (doubleheader), Temple (two single games), Saint Joseph's (doubleheader), Hofstra (NCAA), George Washington (two single games), and La Salle (doubleheader).
The Rams hit the road again for the next four games against Stony Brook (April 13), Charlotte (April 15-16), and Fairleigh Dickinson (April 21), before a mini-homestand against Dayton (April 23), Iona (April 26), and St. Peter's (April 27)
The regular season concludes with four road conference games at NCAA participant, Massachusetts (April 29-30), and Rhode Island (May 1).
