Newport News, Va. -
Fordham University sophomore defender Marcus Axelsson (Jorlanda, Sweden/Katrinelund) was named Atlantic 10 Men's Soccer Co-Player of the Week, it was announced today by the conference. This is Axelsson's first career Atlantic 10 weekly honor.
Axelsson played a big part in a 2-0 week for the Fordham men's soccer team, anchoring a Ram defense that posted a pair of shutouts, while registering the game-winning tally against Manhattan and the game-winning assist at Marist.
At Marist, the scoreless draw was decided in the final seconds of the extra session, as Axelsson distributed a pass to teammate Tim Richardson for the game-winning goal at the 99:56 mark. The Swedish import then followed that performance with the Rams' lone goal of the contest against Manhattan, heading in an assist from John Niyonsaba's free kick, for his first tally of the season.
Axelsson and the rest of the Rams (5-4-0) will next be in action on Friday, October 8th, as they begin Atlantic 10 conference play at La Salle, as the second half of a soccer doubleheader. The match is set for an approximate 7:30 PM start.
