Women's Tennis Falls to URI, 4-3

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham women's tennis squad was able to take three singles matches from the visiting University of Rhode Island squad but it wasn't enough as Fordham fell to Rhode Island, 4-3, on the Hawthorn/Rooney Courts on Sunday.

Fordham opened the match dropping the doubles point, losing two of the three doubles matches. Sarah Tremaine and Mia Fiocca fell at first doubles to Pam Emery and Kirsten Leikem, 8-6, while Bethany Boyle and Taylor Holt were upended by Brooke Hoover and Jenna Williams at the third position, 8-2. Angelika Dabu and Hanna Fritzinger were able to win at second doubles for Fordham, defeating Christen Cadigan and Tristany Leikem, 8-6.

The two Rams then split the three singles matches with Fordham winning at the first, second and fourth positions. Fiocca took an extended first singles from Emery, winning the first set, 7-6 (9-7 in the tiebreaker), while Emery forced a tiebreaking set with 6-0 win in the second set. Fiocca endured, taking the tiebreaker by a 13-11 score.

At second singles, Dabu defeated Cardigan in straight sets, 6-3, 6-2, while at fourth singles, Fritzinger needed overtime to upend Kirsten Leikem. After dropping the first set, 6-0, Fritzinger rebounded to win the second, 6-2. In the third set, Fritzinger was able to pull out a 7-6 win, taking the tiebreaker 6-3.

Rhode Island won the other three singles matches in straight sets with Tristany Leikem defeating Tremaine at third singles, 7-5, 6-3, Hoover taking fifth singles from Boyle, 6-4, 6-4, and Michelle Dussol downing Monika Chao at the sixth position, 6-2, 6-3.

The Fordham women's tennis team will next be in action on Saturday, October 9th, as they open play at the Marist Invitational in Poughkeepsie, NY.
