Coming off their most successful season to date, capped by an Atlantic10 championship, the Fordham University women's swim team was looking to get off to a fast start in 2010-11 and they did, defeating Marist, 150-93, in the Col. Francis B. Messmore Aquatics Center on Thursday. The Fordham men also won their season opener, besting the Red Foxes 146-91.
The women's win extends the Rams' dual meet unbeaten steak to 17. The last Fordham women's loss in a dual meet was to Williams College in 2008-09.
Leading the way for the Fordham women was Courtney Collyer, Brienne Ryan and Elizabeth Dorger, who each won two events. Collyer took first in the 200 IM, in 2:11.34, as well as the 200 fly, in a time of 2:09.81. Ryan was victorious in the 50 free in 24.13 as well as the 200 back in 2:03.92 while Dorger won both the one (247.34) and three (267.90) meter diving events.
Also winning events for the Fordham women were Alexandra Wessel, who was triumphant the 200 free in her first collegiate meet in a time of 1:55.71, and Kellie Lyver, who won the 100 free in a time of 53.57.
In women's relays, the Fordham 400 medley relay of Ryan, Collyer, Kelly Bunster and Lyver took first in a time of 3:56.12 while the 400 free relay of Wessel, Alana Biagioli, Kara Field and Bunster also took first in 3:37.23.
On the men's side, Michael Grimmett-Norris had a successful first collegiate meet, winning the 500 free in a time of 4:53.59 and the 1000 free in a time of 9:59.05.
Thomas Yi also won a pair of events for the Fordham men, touching first in the 200 back in a time of 1:56.19 and the 200 IM in a time of 1:59.62.
Other event winners for the men were Shintaro Noguchi, who won the 200 free in a first collegiate race in a time of 1:43.99 while also clocking a 49.87 in his 100 fly leg of the 400 medley relay, Billy Colton, who won the 50 free in 21.87, Devon Morris, who took first in the 100 free in 48.14 and Sean McManus, who beat all competitors in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:14.83 clocking.
In men's relays, the 400 medley relay of Robert Gitman, McManus, Noguchi and Morris took first in 3:32.82 as did the 400 free relay of Noguchi, John Kundrat, Yi and Colton in 3:11.41.
The Fordham men's and women's swimming squads will next be in action on Saturday, October 23rd, as they compete in the UConn Invitational in Storrs, Conn., starting at noon.
