Women's Tennis Drops Close Match To UMass

Oct. 11, 2010

Amherst, Mass. - The Fordham women's tennis team put up a strong effort in their make-up match at Massachusetts on Monday, pulling off three-set wins at first and second singles, but it wasn't enough as the Minutewomen won the match, 5-2.

The match opened in doubles play with Fordham's Mia Fiocca and Angelika Dabu defeating Julia Comas and Juliana Motyl, 9-8 (7-4), at first doubles. The Rams, however, would fall 8-5 and 8-0 at second and third doubles, respectively, giving the Minutewomen the doubles point.

In singles play, both Fiocca and Dabu played their way into a super-tiebreaker to decide their respective matches. Fiocca, who lost the opening set, 5-7, at first singles, came back to win her match over Comas, 6-4 and 10-5.

Dabu also pulled out her match against Motyl, winning her second singles match, 6-4, 1-6, and 10-6.

Fordham almost picked up a fourth singles win by Bethany Boyle, but Boyle fell to Clara Matias in two tie-breakers, 7-6 (7-4) and 7-6 (15-13).

The Fordham women's tennis team will next be in action on October 16th-17th as it competes at the Lehigh Invitational in Bethlehem, Pa.
