Track & Field Has Good Showing at Metropolitan Championships

New Haven, Conn. - The Fordham track & field teams competed at the 2010 Metropolitan Indoor Championship over the past two days which stretched from Manhattan College on Friday to Yale University on Saturday. Despite the travel, Fordham performed well as the women placed fifth of 14 teams, while the men were sixth out of 13 teams.

Fordham posted three events wins as well as one IC4A qualifying time over the two-day competition.

Junior Brian Schmidt won the 800 meters in 1:54.83, while sophomore Kerri Gallagher took home the 1,000 meters in 2:53.05. The final winner was the women's distance medley relay, comprised of Gallagher, Catherine Groene, Kelly Connolly, and Brigid Moriarty, which won in a time of 12:09.20.

The Rams' lone IC4A qualifying time came in the men's 4x800 relay, where Tim Hutchinson, Bernard Moore, Carter Ward, and Kevin Fitzgerald placed fourth in a time of 7:50.49.

In all, Fordham had a total of 15 individuals scored, while all six relays scored for the Rams.

Of the women's individuals, Courtnay Newman was the lone dual scorer, placing fourth in the high jump, clearing 5' 1", and fifth in the pentathlon with 2,940 points. In the 5,000 meters, Moriarty just missed an ECAC qualifying time, as she was second in 17:35.89, while Elisabeth Warren and Sheena Parand were fourth in the long jump (17' 7 ½") and 1,000 meters (2:59.79), respectively. Mairin O'Connor wrapped up the scoring, as she finished fifth in the 3,000 meters in 10:36.98.

On the men's side, Fitzgerald was second in the 1,000 meters in 2:28.72, while Christopher Lyons was seventh in the 400 meters in 50.05 seconds. In the 3,000 meters, Julian Saad and Brian Riley finished fourth (8:44.40) and fifth (8:44.84), respectively, with Daniel Clemens taking eighth in the 60 meters hurdles (8.30). Pat Brown and Augustus Gleason rounded out the scoring, as Brown was sixth in the weight throw (49' 2 ½") and Gleason was sixth in the heptathlon (4,169 pts.).

In other relay action, the women's 4x400 relay (Kerry Kwalwasser, Warren, Parand, Ashley Davis) was sixth in 4:06.16, while the 4x800 relay (Deanna Minasi, Christina Machado, Nako Nakatsuka, Dana Mitchell) was fifth in 10:06.34. For the men, the 4x400 relay (Sean Atkinson, Nick Delligatti, Lyons, Schmidt) was third in 3:21.51, with the distance medley relay (Stephen Donnelly, John Cosgrove, Michael Rossi, and Sam Stuart) taking fourth in 10:23.25.

The Fordham track & field teams will next be in action on Saturday, February 6th, when they compete at the New Balance Classic at the Armory Track & Field Center.
