The Fordham water polo team opened play at the 2009 Navy Invitational in Annapolis, Maryland on Saturday, with match-ups against the University of Toronto and an exhibition match against NOVA Club. The Rams picked up a 14-7 win over Toronto, while falling to NOVA, 10-8.
In their first match, five different Rams scored two goals apiece, including Alex Powell, Andrew McKernin, Mikey Edwards, Jakob Muller, and Scott Nemecek, as Fordham went on to a seven-goal win. Martin de Jong, Ali Arat, Mark Connor, and Victor Bautista Medina also netted a goal for Fordham.
In net, Christian Flessner posted a career-high ten saves to go with a steal.
In the second match, Fordham fell to NOVA Club, a Northern Virginia men's club team, by a score of 10-8.
For Fordham, Edwards led the way with three goals in the game, while McKernin, Muller, Arat, Connor, and Bautista Medina also scored. In net, Flessner made nine stops to go with a pair of steals.
Fordham will conclude play at the Navy Invitational on Sunday, as they play matches against Concordia (Calif.) and 18th-ranked Bucknell.
