Men's Tennis Upended by NJIT, 5-2

Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham University men's tennis squad hosted the New Jersey Institute of Technology on the Hawthorn/Rooney on Wednesday with the Highlanders defeating the Rams, 5-2. Brandon Abbatiello and Alex DeRienzo picked up the points for the Rams, winning at the second and sixth singles positions, respectively.

Abbatiello defeated NJIT's Cosmin Chiujdea in straight sets, winning both by identical 6-1 scores. DeRienzo won the first set against Bryan Keelan, 6-2, before dropping the second, 7-6. He came back to take the tiebreaker, 7-4.

In other singles action, Dallas Harting fell to Stephen Erikson at first singles (6-2, 6-1) while Kevin Maloney lost to Diego Abreu at the third position (6-3, 6-0). Austin Shoup dropped fourth singles to Dan Salomon (6-4, 6-2) and Ken Fukumoto was ousted by Dimitri Athans at fifth singles (6-1, 6-3).

In the doubles competition, Harting and Abbatiello lost first doubles to Erickson and Chiujdea (8-5) while Kelly and Fukumoto lost to Abreu and Athans at second doubles (8-6) and John Thornhill and Dan Kane-West fell at third doubles to Salomon and Keelan (8-5).

The Rams will next be in action on Saturday, September 26th, as they travel to Staten Island to face Wagner College at 11:00 AM.
