Fordham University junior 2M Mikey Edwards (Walnut, Calif./Rowland) was named the Collegiate Water Polo Association (CWPA) Northern Division Player of the Week it was announced today. Edwards won the award for scoring 20 goals while adding five steals and two assists to lead the Rams to a sixth place finish at the 2009 Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Championship at Princeton last weekend.
Playing five games in three days at ECACs after earning a No. 7 seed, the Rams defeated Northern Division foes Connecticut College (17-4 W), Harvard University (8-4 W) and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (10-4 W), while falling to No. 20-nationally ranked Princeton University (13-9 L) and Bucknell University (13-11 L).
Against Connecticut, Edwards punched in seven goals before chipping in two markers versus Princeton and a hat-trick against Harvard. He wrapped up the tournament by tacking on four goals against MIT before adding four more versus Bucknell.
A transfer from Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California and a two-time Junior College All-America selection, leading the state in scoring in each of those seasons, he is the first Fordham player to earn Player of the Week honors since Timmy Will '09 (October 13, 2008).
