The Fordham volleyball team saw their six-match win streak come to a stop as Long Beach State swept a three-set match from the Rams in the opening match of the Brea Embassy Suites Fullerton Classic in Fullerton, California. Final set scores were 25-20, 25-23, and 25-17.
Long Beach State (6-3), which is receiving votes for the top 25, hit .333 for the match, posting 50 kills to go with five team blocks.
The 49ers jumped out to an eight-point lead, 13-5, early in the first set. Fordham (8-5) rallied to within four, 22-18, following a kill by Jenna Hart and a Long Beach error. The 49ers though would hold on for a five-point win, 25-20, capped by a Naomi Washington kill.
Set two was far closer with the Rams staying within one point of the 49ers, 23-22, after a kill by Christi Griffiths. The 49ers though would get set point on a Washington kill, and later win, 25-23, on a kill by Caitlin Ledoux.
Set three saw the Rams and 49ers tied at 13, but Long Beach State went on a 9-2 run to put the match out of reach for the Rams.
For Fordham, Griffiths and Katie Wells each had eight kills and two blocks, while Kailee May had seven kills and 10 digs. Kim Capicotto finished the night with 26 assists, eight digs, and two kills.
Long Beach State was paced by Washington and Ledoux, who both had 17 kills in the match.
The Fordham volleyball team continues play at the Brea Embassy Suites Fullerton Classic on Saturday, September 19th. Fordham will first meet seventh-ranked UCLA at 4:30 PM Eastern (1:30 Pacific), and then host Cal State Fullerton at 10:00 PM Eastern (7:00 PM Pacific).
