Bronx, N.Y. - The pestering rain did not keep the 2009 Fordham Baseball Young Alumni Challenge from getting underway with the annual event going off without a hitch. In a game that saw nearly 25 former Fordham faces coming back to Rose Hill, the alumni used a second inning run to defeat the Rams, 1-0.
Junior Brian Pendergast got the start for the Rams and though he gave up the lone run to the alumni when Joe Ciccone's ground rule double brought home Jordan Lert in the second inning, keeping such a tough alumni lineup to just one run was a feat in itself.
Over 13 years after his final game in a Rams uniform, 1996 graduate Henry Toolan took the hill for the alumni and tossed a few scoreless innings, including putting the Rams down in order in the bottom of the first.
The alumni defeated the Rams not only with their bats, but they showed that they could still play the field with the best of them. In the second inning, Javy Martinez ('07), a pitcher by trade, threw out Ryan Maghini from right field when he was trying to score from second on a Michael Taddei single. Kris Kozlowski ('00) joined in on the action on the field when he picked off Joe Russo at first base in the third inning.
Each side scattered hits and stranded runners throughout the rest of the seven inning game. The Rams did get to see a pair of their lefty hurlers throw with freshmen Ryan DeMartino and Rich Anastasi getting out of jams with runners in scoring position without giving up a run.
