Buffalo, N.Y. - Coming off an excellent performance on Friday night, the Fordham volleyball team had the unenviable task of playing back-to-back matches on Saturday. Despite two comeback efforts, the Rams came up short in both matches, falling to host Buffalo in five sets and Boston College in four.
With the losses, Fordham is now 1-2 on the year.
In match one, Fordham came back from a set down to force a deciding fifth set, but Buffalo held on for the five set victory. Final set scores were 21-25, 25-22, 25-21, 20-25, and 15-11.
Fordham came out strong with a first set win, hitting .333 as a group, with Kailee May and Katie Wells each having four kills. Fordham led by as many as six points at 23-17, before a kill by Christi Griffiths closed out the set, 25-21.
In set two with the score knotted at ten, Buffalo went on a 10-2 run to take a 20-12 lead. Fordham fought its way back to within two, 24-22, on an ace by Brittany Daulton, but Dani Silvers closed out the set with a kill for Buffalo.
After the Bulls took a 2-1 lead with a third set win, Fordham battled back in the fourth set. With the score tied at 16, the Rams got kills from Wells and May, as well as a Buffalo error to grab a 19-16 lead. After Buffalo cut the lead back to one, 21-20, Fordham rallied for the final four points to take the fourth set, which was capped by a Sara Friede kill.
In the deciding set, Fordham jumped out to a 4-1 lead on three Buffalo errors. The Bulls however scored six of the next seven points to take a 7-5 lead. The Rams were within three, 12-9, after a kill and service ace by Friede, but the Bulls did not relinquish the lead and went on to a four-point win.
For Fordham, May, Friede, and Katherine Burrell all recorded double-doubles with Burrell posting six kills, 50 assists, 15 digs, and two blocks. With the 50 assists, Burrell became the fifth Ram to reach 3,000 assists for her career, giving her 3,042 to date. May tallied 15 kills and 17 digs, while Friede finished with 10 kills and 19 digs. Griffiths added a team-high 16 kills and four blocks.
In their second match of the day, Fordham fell to Boston College in four sets. Final set scores were 25-20, 25-13, 19-25, and 25-16.
The Eagles took advantage of the back-to-back matches for Fordham, hitting .304 as a team to go with 11.5 blocks. In the first two sets, Boston College hit .367 and .484, respectively, committing only one error in each set.
Fordham rebounded to take set three, 25-19, behind six kills from May and three each from Jolanda Gunning-Snowden and Wells.
The Rams though could not complete a comeback, as the Eagles hit .367 in the fourth set, and scored 10 of the final 12 points to close out the match.
For Fordham, May recorded her second double-double of the day with 16 kills and 13 digs, while Griffiths had 12 kills. Burrell dished out 43 assists to go with eight digs and a pair of aces. Defensively, Megan Arend and Michele Keathley had 15 and 14 digs respectively.
Following the tournament, Fordham's Christi Griffiths was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Fordham volleyball team will next be in action on Friday, September 4th, as they compete at the St. John's Tournament in Queens, N.Y., where they will meet Quinnipiac, St. John's and Boston College.
