Kelly Shaver Named Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at Fordham University

Bronx, N.Y. - Kelly Shaver, who has served as an intern with the Fordham University Strength and Conditioning Office for the past year, was named Assistant Strength and Conditioning Coach at the school it was announced today.

After arriving at Fordham in August of 2008, Shaver's intern duties included assisting in warm-ups, coaching speed and conditioning sessions and teaching proper lifting techniques for the football and women's basketball squads. This past spring, he worked with the Ram water polo, track and field, softball, crew and men's soccer teams, developing, implementing and supervising their strength and conditioning programs. Shaver also coached weekly sessions with the men's and women's sprinters on proper running mechanics as well as aided in the post-rehabilitation of injured student-athletes.

Prior to arriving at Fordham, Shaver has served as an Assistant Sports Performance Director at Velocity Sports Performance in Manhattan from May of 2007 until May of 2008. At Velocity Sports Performance, he was responsible for coaching athletes of all ages and skill levels with emphasis on high school, college and professional athletes, including serving as strength coach for the 2008 Beijing Silver medalist U.S. Men's Saber Team. Shaver also managed and trained the sports performance coaches and interns on Velocity methods.

A 2007 magna cum laude graduate of Georgia Southern University with a degree in Kinesiology and Exercise Science, Shaver served as an undergraduate strength and conditioning intern at the school from January of 2006 until May of 2007. He worked directly with all the student-athletes with a focus on development, implementation and supervision of the strength and conditioning program for the cross country and track teams.

In his final semester at Georgia Southern, Shaver also served as a strength and conditioning research assistant, conducting research on core body temperature and heat illness among college football players, cortisol response and overtraining syndrome and the efficacy of "fad" diets.

Shaver is a certified NSCA strength and conditioning specialist, USA Weightlifting sports performance coach and a NASE speed and explosion specialist.
