Bronx, N.Y. -
Fordham volleyball head coach Peter Volkert announced the newest additions to the 2009 squad today, as middle hitter Randi Ewing (Demarest, N.J./Dwight-Englewood School) and defensive specialist Michele Keathley (Bakersfield, Calif./Stockdale) will suit up for the Rams next season.
Ewing was a three-year varsity volleyball player at the Dwight-Englewood School. She served as team captain during her senior campaign and was an Honorable Mention All-Bergen County selection. She set the school records in kills and blocks, earning First Team All-League and the Sportsmanship Award from the BCSL Olympic Division in 2008. She capped her senior year, earning the 2008 Ann M. Hardy Award, the highest award presented to a senior female athlete by Dwight-Englewood. In her junior season, Ewing was a Second Team All-League selection and received the 2007 Elizabeth Carson Award, given to a female athlete for outstanding achievement in a single sport. In addition to Dwight-Englewood, she also plays for the Do It Garden State Volleyball Club (DIGS), and was a two-year member of the honor roll. Randi is the latest athlete from her family, as her brother, Patrick Ewing Jr. was the 2008 Big East Sixth Man of the Year at Georgetown, while her father, Patrick Ewing was a former NBA All-Star and U.S. Olympian.
Keathley was a three-year varsity volleyball player at Stockdale High School, where she was a First Team All-League and Second Team All-Area performer in 2008. She also received top defensive player honors by the team, as well as the 2008 Outstanding Athlete Award, presented by the Jockey Club of Bakersfield. A three-time Top Academic Athlete Award recipient (2005-07), she was a four-year member of the honor roll, the Dean's List, and the California Scholarship Federation. Away from Stockdale, Keathley played club volleyball for Kern River Volleyball Club and Club Jamba. She has also been heavily involved in community service work, volunteering at the Salvation Army as well as a teacher's aide for elementary school children. She has also participated in mission trips to Mexico, Compton, and Los Angeles.
The Fordham volleyball team will open their 2009 campaign on August 28th against Seton Hall University, as a part of the University at Buffalo Tournament in Buffalo, N.Y.
