Bronx, N.Y. - The Fordham volleyball team announced their 2009 schedule today, which will feature a new 15-game Atlantic 10 schedule, as well as four tournaments in non-conference play, highlighted by matches against college volleyball powerhouses, UCLA and Long Beach State. The Rams will also host the Rose Hill Classic for the ninth straight season.
Fordham, an Atlantic 10 championship participant in each of the last three seasons, will open their 36th varsity season in Buffalo, New York, at the University at Buffalo Tournament, August 28-29, where the Rams will face Seton Hall, Buffalo, and Boston College. Following that tournament, the Rams will compete the following weekend at the St. John's Tournament in Queens, where Fordham will match up with St. John's, Quinnipiac, and Boston College for the second time.
The Rams then have their home opener on September 9th, when they host Iona College at 7:00 PM. Following that match, Fordham will host the 9th Annual Rose Hill Classic on September 11-12. The tournament will feature nine matches between Fordham, Manhattan, Seton Hall, Central Connecticut State, and Sacred Heart over the two-day stretch.
Fordham's final regular season tournament will take place on September 18-19, as the Rams head out west for a tournament hosted by Cal State Fullerton. On top of a match with the host Titans, Fordham will match up with UCLA and Long Beach State, both of whom made the NCAA tournament a year ago and finished ranked in the top 25 by season's end.
Besides the tournaments, Fordham has five other non-conference matches, which includes the home opener against Iona. Fordham will meet Fairfield (Sept. 15) and Hofstra (Sept. 29) on the road, while hosting Rutgers (Oct. 21) and Villanova (Oct. 25).
The Atlantic 10 conference adopted a new scheduling format for 2009, where there will be no separation of divisions between East and West, just one large division and a 15-game schedule, which is two more than last year. Fordham will play home-and-home series against Saint Louis, Duquesne, Charlotte, Xavier, Temple, and Rhode Island, while having single games against Dayton (home), George Washington (away), and La Salle (away).
The Rams will look to make their fourth consecutive championship appearance at the 2009 Atlantic 10 Championship, which will be held in Dayton, Ohio.
